Patients receiving treatment at the Lantoro long-stay psychiatric institution, Abeokuta, Nigeria were divided into two groups (short and long-stay) according to their duration of stay. In Nigeria today, as in many other African countries, traditional healing practices exist side by side with modern medical practice (Lambo, 1959 and 1961; Lucas and Hendrickse, 1966; Harding, 1973; Ademuwagun, 1976).
