  • Fetal and infant growth and impaired glucose tolerance at age 64.

    Open Access•C N Hales, David J Barker et al.•ARTICLE•BMJ•1991

OBJECTIVE: To discover whether reduced fetal and infant growth is associated with non-insulin dependent diabetes and impaired glucose tolerance in adult life. DESIGN: Follow up study of men born during 1920-30 whose birth weights and weights at 1 year were known. SETTING: Hertfordshire, England. • Atlas of Mortality from Selected Diseases in England and Wales 1968-1978

    Norman Pye, M J Gardner et al.•ARTICLE•Geographical Journal•1986•Cited by: 2

Maps for selected individual causes of death other than cancer are presented for England and Wales. The maps are based on official data from the Office of Population Censuses and Surveys for the years 1968-1978. Data are presented by sex for counties and for each of the 1366 local authority areas as constituted in 1971. (ANNOTATION

  • Atlas of Cancer Mortality in England and Wales 1968-1978

    Norman Pye, M J Gardner et al.•ARTICLE•Geographical Journal•1985•Cited by: 1

Death rates for an extensive list of different cancers have been calculated for each of the 1366 Local Authority areas [in England and Wales] as constituted in 1971 as well as aggregated areas such as Counties. Maps of the geographical distribution of these cancers are shown in this volume....Following the map sections of the atlas there is a one-page summary of some features of the deaths from each cancer. These include the numbers of deaths and…

  • Mapping small area cancer mortality

    Martin J Gardner, P D Winter•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•1984•Cited by: 2•References: 1

During the compilation of an atlas of cancer mortality in England and Wales on a small area scale, one rural district was found to have raised death rates for most sites of cancer. On investigation this proved to be related to the opening in that district of a home for patients terminally ill with cancer. Deaths occurring in the home to patients from outside areas were not consistently transferred back to the deceased's area of residence. The eff…

  • Mortality from thyrotoxicosis in England and Wales and its association with the previous prevalence of endemic goitre

    David Phillips, D I Phillips et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•1983•Cited by: 1•References: 4

The distribution of mortality from thyrotoxicosis among women in England and Wales during 1968-78 correlates with the previous prevalence of endemic goitre. Mortality from the disease rose to a peak in the decade 1931-40 and then declined. This peak affected all age groups and can be attributed to the high fatality from surgery before the introduction of preoperative iodine to prevent thyroid crisis. An apparent cohort effect, whereby cohorts bor…
