  • The Impact of the Correctional Ecosystem on Bullying Victimization Among Incarcerated Juvenile Offenders in Taiwan

    Open Access•Y L Lai, Ching-Wei Liu et al.•ARTICLE•Deviant Behavior•2026

This study employs a correctional ecosystem perspective to examine how individual factors (impulsiveness and depression), interpersonal interactions (staff–inmate relations and peer relations), and correctional subcultures (inmate subculture, bullying subculture, and power imbalance) shape bullying victimization among incarcerated juvenile offenders. Using survey data collected in 2015 from 1,045 incarcerated youths across four Taiwanese juvenile…

  • Violent Victimization Histories and the Victim-Offender Overlap among Incarcerated Youth: Toward Trauma-Informed Juvenile Justice

Open Access•Tzu-Ying Lo, Yu-Hsuan Liu et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Offender…•2026

This study examines the victim-offender overlap among incarcerated youth in Taiwan’s juvenile correctional facilities, focusing on how violent victimization histories shape their experiences of misconduct and victimization during confinement. Drawing on a national census of youth in custody, multinomial logistic regression was employed to compare victim-offenders with victims-only, offenders-only, and uninvolved youth. Results indicate that viole…

  • Community policing, social capital, and residents’ feelings of safety in Taiwan

Tzu-Ying Lo, Kevin T Wolff et al.•ARTICLE•Police Practice and Research•2023

The history of community policing has now reached a half-century mark, but evidence regarding its effectiveness in reducing fear of crime has been inconsistent. A closer examination of existing research suggests that there must be an underlying process linking community policing and community residents’ fear of crime. Thus, this study draws on Putnam’s theoretical framework to test a conceptual mechanism of social capital underlying the associati…

  • An Exploration into the Lived Experiences of Young People Forced to Beg and Sell Goods in Kampala, Uganda

Lauren Moton, Meredith Dank et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Human Trafficking•2023

Children and youth in Uganda are susceptible to forced labor. To gain insight into their lived experiences, we employed an explanatory sequential mixed methods framework, administering 530 surveys then interviewing a subset of 36 survey takers. Through the lens of child standpoint theory, we examined participant demographics, type of work and entry points, abuse, and help seeking/barriers to leaving. Key findings include the following: 1) Partici…

  • Big data in crime statistics: Using Google Trends to measure victimization in designated market areas across the United States

    Open Access•Yu-Hsuan Liu, Kevin T Wolff et al.•ARTICLE•Methodological Innovations•2023•Cited by: 2•References: 79

Google Trends (GT) data could potentially supplement traditional crime measurement strategies, allowing criminologists to better understand crime statistics on a macro level. This study assesses the validity of GT crime estimates. The findings indicate that GT data are reliable for estimating MVT, larceny, and rape. Additionally, we illustrate how to use GT to identify places with high rates of unreported offenses. The results of this study demon…
