Women’s Empowerment and Its Limits
This book will be of interest to scholars, students, and policymakers across Sociology, Gender Studies, Politics, Law, and Economics.
Trust in disaster resilience
Purpose The erosion of ‘trust’ (among citizens as well as within and between institutional levels) is a worrying aspect of these turbulent times in Europe and beyond. Trust (between citizens and institutions, citizens and experts, policymakers and experts, and among different levels of governance) is crucial in all dimensions of disaster resilience. Risk perceptions stem from a complex web of feedback between individuals, communities, institution…
Vulnerability, Intertemporality, and Climate Litigation
The entire world is experiencing a combination of old threats and new climate-related disasters; they are perceptible in our everyday lives at an unprecedented level. The current pandemic, together with geopolitical instability, has dramatically demonstrated how exposure to multiple risks can disproportionately affect people in vulnerable situations. This article aims to explore how the international human rights framework takes into account the …
Women's Empowerment and Its Limits
Gender Equality in the Mirror
This book starts with a historical account of concepts, principles, sources, and the institutional framework that define the contours of a 'gender-positive environment' and provide new opportunities for removing resilient barriers to economic empowerment and equal participation of women.
The ‘inconfinables’ or the creation of ‘superfluous lives’ in times of crisis
Gender, class, ethnicity and generation played a determining role in exposure to the COVID-19 virus and in access to care. This translated into differences in communicability, morbidity and mortality. Migrants and ethnic minorities have been over-represented among serious cases, just as they are often also disproportionately affected during natural disasters and crises. We focus on a segment of vulnerable population defined by the French term ‘in…
Asean People-to-People Connectivity
The concept of intra-regional connectivity is emerging as the rationale for the ASEAN regional project and will develop around three pillars: the physical infrastructure, the institutions and the people. Specifically, the facilitation of the free movement of highly skilled migrant workers at the regional level is identified in ASEAN documents as a primary mechanism to achieve people-to-people connectivity. The paper aims to study the emerging reg…
Global–regional interaction to extend access to social protection for migrant workers
Universal access to social protection for migrant workers is emerging as a problematic issue in the implementation of free movement regimes at a regional level. This article focuses on the concept of regional governance as a possible mechanism to address the unsolved challenges of social security regimes to extend coverage. To this end, the article looks at current legal developments in two regional projects (ASEAN and MERCOSUR) to identify a cre…
UNHCR and protection and assistance for the victims of climate change
This contribution argues that despite the fact that the United Nations Refugee Convention does not cover persons subject to climate change induced displacement, these people should be protected by the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). This is the case because UNHCR's own Executive Committee has incorporated the broader African definition of a refugee that does include climate refugees into their protection mandate. We therefore conclude …
Adaptive migration
The interaction between environmental change and human mobility is attracting global attention, both in policy circles and in the contemporary literature. This introductory essay proposes using the concept of pluralism to explore the multi-dimensional relationship between climate change and migration and to advance new perspectives and concepts to interpret the emerging theory of adaptive migration. The papers included in this themed section cove…

Security and Migration in the 21st Century
This extremely interesting monograph provides a comprehensive overview of the migration-security nexus, investigating key issues raised by this relationship and trying to overcome the uncertain and heterogeneous nature of available information in the field. As stated by the Special Rapporteur on Human Rights of Migrants, migration has become a critical and debated issue in many countries1 and, among its consequences, the implications and impact o…

Catherine Dauvergne, Making People Illegal
During the last few years, the phenomenon of international migration has become a matter of concern, highlighting several critical issues pertinent to the relationship between the protection of migrants in an ‘illegal’ situation and the implementation of international human rights standards. This book constitutes a valuable contribution to the recent academic debate highlighting the positive influence of migration law to understanding globalisati…
