Communicative Grammar and Communicative Competence

Twenty‐first century technologies and language education

Communicative Grammar and Communicative Competence
Our notions of competence are inevitably influenced by our understanding of what grammar is. This entry offers an expanded perspective on grammar and considers implications for the ways we think about competence and about the teaching of languages.
Making connections through texts in language teaching
Language is not just a tool for communication. It is also a resource for creative thought, a framework for understanding the world, a key to new knowledge and human history, and a source of pleasure and inspiration. The Connections Standard is about linking language and literature study to other disciplines (for example, art, music, film, history, among others) and about getting students to experience unique viewpoints available only through a pa…
Perspectives on Technology in Learning and Teaching Languages
Rapid evolution of communication technologies has changed language pedagogy and language use, enabling new forms of discourse, new forms of authorship, and new ways to create and participate in communities. The first section of this article identifies and discusses four key issues arising from the recent technology-related literature (the status of CALL, its theoretical grounding, its cultural embeddedness, and its effectiveness). The second sect…
