  • The future of geography field course pedagogy in UK higher education

    Open Access•Ewan J Woodley, Stewart Barr et al.•ARTICLE•Geo Geography and Environment•2024•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 17

Field courses are widely regarded as integral to geography degree programmes, providing students with opportunities for experiential learning, often in unfamiliar international environments. Yet, this key area of pedagogy appears increasingly unsustainable and complex for Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) within the context of the urgent need for decarbonisation, increasing financial costs, and the institutional challenges of comprehensively e…

  • Decolonising spaces of geographical knowledge production

    Open Access•Tariq Jazeel, A D Mackay et al.•ARTICLE•Area•2022•Citada por: 5•Referencias: 5

This commentary is a response to the Area commentary by Mark Griffiths and Kate Baker, which draws focus on the problematic prominence of colonial material histories at the Royal Geographical Society (with IBG)'s Lowther Lodge site. We outline an undergraduate field trip – run collaboratively by University College London (UCL) and the RGS‐IBG since 2018 – for first‐year UCL geography students that aims to make them both aware of geography's probl…

  • Classics Revisited

Open Access•Julian Leyland, Hilary Geoghegan et al.•ARTICLE•Area•2022•Citada por: 4•Referencias: 13

This editorial introduces a Classics Revisited collection within which a range of invited authors have used Louise Bracken and Emma Mawdsley's paper, ‘“Muddy glee”: Rounding out the picture of women and physical geography fieldwork’, as inspiration for reflection and to broaden the debate around geography fieldwork. Published in 2004, ‘Muddy glee’ sought to engage with feminist critiques of the masculinist endeavour of fieldwork, whilst trying to…

  • Peter Roberts Smith

He is greatly …

  • Urban Rivers

    Open Access•Angela Gurnell, Angela M Gurnell et al.•ARTICLE•Geography Compass•2007•Citada por: 7•Referencias: 69

This article describes how urban development impacts on the processes that control river geomorphology and influence ecology. At the catchment scale, urban development transforms the hydrological system through construction of impervious surfaces and stormwater drainage systems. River water and sediment quality also are affected by stormwater and waste water drainage and by point and diffuse inputs of pollutants. Within the river channel network,…

  • Alpine lake sediment records of the impact of glaciation and climate change on the biogeochemical cycling of soil nutrients

    Open Access•Gabriel Filippelli, Gabriel M Filippelli et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2006

Lake sediment cores from the Coast Mountains of British Columbia were analyzed using chemical sequential extractions to partition the dominant geochemical fractions of phosphorus (P). The P fractions include mineral P (the original source of bioavailable P), occluded P (bound to soil oxides), and organic P (remains of organic matter). By comparing P fractions of soil and recent lake sediment samples, these fractions are shown to be a valid proxy …

  • Contributions to the Understanding of Geomorphic Landscapes Published in the Annals

    Open Access•Judith K Haschenburger, Catherine Souch•ARTICLE•Annals of the Association of…•2004•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 178

Papers on geomorphology published in the Annals since its inception are evaluated in terms of their contributions to the understanding of geomorphic landscapes. Six principles that underlie contemporary understanding of landscape structure and function are identified and used as a framework to evaluate contributions published. Research trends in the papers are described for four periods, with attention to the development of fundamental geomorphic…
