  • The Shadow of the Law

    Open Access•Cliff Durand•ARTICLE•Law & Social Inquiry•2025•References: 27

The law is commonly described as one of the major forces shaping contemporary correctional institutions. However, we still lack a satisfactory understanding of how it has affected power relations behind bars. Drawing from two ethnographies of French correctional facilities, this article finds that changes to the material environment where incarcerated people and correctional staff interact have altered the relational economy of prisons and jails …

  • The asymmetrical negotiation of legal certainty

    Open Access•Cliff Durand, Jérôme Pélisse•ARTICLE•Socio-Economic Review•2025•References: 55

This article argues that face-to-face professional events where regulators and regulated parties engage in civil and scholarly conversations about the law, such as conferences, seminars, and training sessions, are central to how regulations are interpreted and applied-an understudied aspect of regulatory capture. Critically revisiting Bourdieu and Boltanski's notion of neutral place, we reconceptualize these events as places where dominant agents…

  • Porter la cause devant les Hautes Cours

Cliff Durand, Corentin Durand et al.•ARTICLE•Politix•2023•Cited by: 1

  • “Penal Power, Then, Exercises a Grip That Has Become Tighter and More Demanding, Even if in Many Respects its Form Has Softened”

Open Access•Ben Crewe, Cliff Durand et al.•ARTICLE•Champ pénal•2022

PhD. in Sociology, Ben Crewe is Professor of Penology and Criminal Justice at the University of Cambridge, where he co-heads the Prison Research Centre.

    Open Access•Cliff Durand, Corentin Durand•ARTICLE•Sociologie du Travail•2018•Cited by: 3•References: 28

Contrair…

  • Cuba's New Cooperatives

    Cliff Durand•ARTICLE•Monthly Review•2017•Cited by: 1

Historians have long documented the ways that capitalism drew its early accumulation from the dispossession of commonly owned resources—a process that continues to this day. Building a socialist society and economy can be thought of as a reversal of this process—a reclaiming of commons. The resources that contribute to human development do so best when shared and governed democratically. This includes not only the forests and fields of the pre-ca…

  • Construire sa légitimité à énoncer le droit. Étude de doléances de prisonniers

Cliff Durand, Corentin Durand•ARTICLE•Droit et société•2014•Cited by: 13
