    Research conducted in California near the peak of social activism in the late 1960s concluded that clergy in general, and the doctrinally orthodox in particular, tended not to address controversial social and political issues from the pulpit. This study, conducted a decade later in North Carolina, found much higher levels of sermonizing on a broad range of social issues.
