Codesigning a mindfulness-based intervention with community violence intervention workers and youth
20) to explore reactions to the pilot. Stemming from the strong relationships between university researchers and the community partners, a key finding was the importance of cocreating mindfulness supports not only for youth but also for CVI workers who support them. Our success underscores that when collaboratively developed with a beginner's mind, MBIs are a promising tool for fostering resilience in communities disproportionately affected by st…

Associations between child eating behaviors with eating patterns and diet quality in preschool-aged children
Online administration of a pilot mindfulness-based intervention for adolescents
Mediation of the association between social environmental characteristics of family childcare home and weight status in children by diet quality
Children's diet quality did significantly mediate the relationship between the food served in FCCHs and children's weight status. More longitudinal studies with longer follow-up periods need to be conducted to confirm these relationships. Further, future studies need to examine the relationships between a broader spectrum of FCCH environmental characteristics and home environment with children's weight status, as well as other mediators including…

Identifying Barriers to and Facilitators of Using a Mobile Fruit and Vegetable Market Intervention Delivered to Low-Income Housing Sites
Background Mobile fruit and vegetable (F&V) markets may be a promising strategy to improve F&V intake among low-income and racial/ethnic minority groups. However, challenges remain in terms of maximizing the reach and utilization of such markets. Therefore, this study identifies perceived barriers to and facilitators of utilizing a mobile F&V market among residents who lived in low-income housing that received the markets. Specifically, this arti…
Feeding and Activity Environments for Infants and Toddlers in Childcare Centers and Family Childcare Homes in Southeastern New England
Few studies have documented the food and physical activity (PA) environments of childcare settings caring for children <24 months of age, although they may be key contributors to developing child PA and diet patterns. We used an adapted Environment and Policy Assessment and Observation tool to assess the food and activity environments for infants and toddlers in childcare centers (n = 21) and family childcare homes (FCCH) (n = 20) and explored di…
Distributing Summer Meals during a Pandemic
The USDA summer food programs provide meals for children when school is not in session. Although the COVID-19 pandemic has created challenges for food distribution programs, many regulations have been waived, providing opportunities for new approaches to meal distribution. The aim of this study was to identify practices designed to increase program participation during the summer of 2021. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with food servic…
Food insecurity, food parenting practices, and child eating behaviors among low-income Hispanic families of young children
Physical Activity Levels among Preschool-Aged Children in Family Child Care Homes
Obesity prevalence among Hispanic children is twice that of non-Hispanic white children; Hispanic children may also engage in less physical activity (PA) compared to non-Hispanic white children. A large number of U.S. preschool-aged children are cared for in Family Child Care Homes (FCCH), yet few studies have examined PA levels and ethnicity differences in PA levels among these children. We examine baseline data from a cluster-randomized trial (…
Racial Differences in Perceived Food Swamp and Food Desert Exposure and Disparities in Self-Reported Dietary Habits
Both food swamps and food deserts have been associated with racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic disparities in obesity rates. Little is known about how the distribution of food deserts and food swamps relate to disparities in self-reported dietary habits, and health status, particularly for historically marginalized groups. In a national U.S. sample of 4305 online survey participants (age 18+), multinomial logistic regression analyses were used to …

(# NCT02452645 ) ClinicalTrials.gov Trial registered on May 22, 2015
Examining neighborhood and interpersonal norms and social support on fruit and vegetable intake in low-income communities
To our knowledge, no other studies have examined neighborhood, family, and peer norms and social support simultaneously and in relation to F&V intake. These findings may inform neighborhood interventions and community-level policies to reduce neighborhood disparities in F&V consumption
Are Experiences of Discrimination Related to Poorer Dietary Intakes Among South Asians in the Masala Study
A multi-level intervention in subsidized housing sites to increase fruit and vegetable access and intake

The influence of Hope VI neighborhood revitalization on neighborhood-based physical activity
Moderating Effects of Health Literacy on Change in Physical Activity Among Latinas in a Randomized Trial
Effects of a community-based intervention on physical activity
OBJECTIVES: The effect of a community-based physical activity program in Pawtucket, RI, was evaluated relative to one in a comparison community. METHODS: Cross-sectional surveys of 7529 residents of Pawtucket, RI, and 7732 residents of the comparison city were conducted at 2-year intervals during 7 years of intervention. RESULTS: There were no differences in self-reported knowledge of the benefits of physical activity, attempts to increase exerci…
The Evolution of a Physical Activity Campaign
This article describes the process of developing the Pawtucket Heart Health Program moderate-intensity physical activity campaign, Imagine Action, from its pilot, Get Fit. The study took place in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. Focus groups were held to evaluate the pilot and elicit suggestions for the new campaign. Get Fit promoted fitness and Imagine Action promoted moderate-intensity activities. Demographic and qualitative data (N=810) were collected…
High-density-lipoprotein cholesterol and types of alcoholic beverages consumed among men and women
OBJECTIVES. Differences by sex in the relationship between high-density-lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol and consumption of alcoholic beverages were examined in 1516 individuals. METHODS. Questionnaires and blood-sample data from cross-sectional surveys were analyzed. RESULTS. Both beer and liquor were independently associated with increased HDL cholesterol in the total group, in men, and in women after covariates were controlled for. Wine was assoc…
