  • Correlates of changes in children's independent mobility during the Covid-19 pandemic: A Canadian national longitudinal study

Open Access•Sudipta Roy, Nimesh B Patel et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Transport Geography•2026

Children's independent mobility (CIM) is linked to higher physical activity in cross-sectional research, but longitudinal assessments of correlates of changes in CIM are lacking. We investigated social-ecological correlates of changes in CIM during the COVID-19 pandemic and whether they differ by gender. Every six months between December 2020 and 2021, we surveyed Canadian parents of 7- to 12-year-olds ( n = 2291) to assess mobility licenses (chi…

  • Stranger danger or good Samaritan? A cross-sectional study examining correlates of tolerance of risk in outdoor play among Canadian parents

Open Access•G Faulkner, Matthew Fagan et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2025

Tailored interventions that reframe perceptions of risk for parents are needed. Such interventions could reframe concerns about stranger danger which persist despite occurrences of stranger abduction being extremely rare. Interventions could also be targeted to immigrant families and those with fewer children as they appear to be more averse to risk. A complementary focus on examining how cultural background influences risk perceptions is needed …

  • Identification of distinct physical activity profiles through adolescence: A longitudinal qualitative description study

Open Access•Mario Bélanger, Julie Goguen et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Sports and Active…•2024•References: 6

Introduction We aimed to better understand longitudinal physical activity experiences among initially active adolescents and to identify and describe distinct physical activity profiles. Participants were interviewed once a year for six year…

  • Parent-Perceived Changes in Active Transportation and Independent Mobility among Canadian Children in Relation to the Covid-19 Pandemic: Results from Two National Surveys

Richard Larouche, Sarah A Moore et al.•ARTICLE•Children Youth and Environments•2022

Children's active transportation (AT) and independent mobility (IM) can provide benefits for health and social development. Using data from two national surveys, we assessed parent-perceived changes in AT and IM among 5- to 17-year-olds in Canada since the outbreak of COVID-19. About half of parents reported no changes, but two to three times more parents reported declines compared to increases in AT and IM. We explored many potential correlates …

  • Trajectories of beverage consumption during adolescence

Open Access•Radhouene Doggui, Stephanie Ward et al.•ARTICLE•Appetite•2022•Cited by: 3•References: 42

Beverages contribute substantially to daily energy and nutrient intakes. However, little is known about the co-development of beverage consumption throughout adolescence. This study aimed to investigate the presence of naturally occurring sub-groups of girls and boys following distinct trajectories of various types of beverage consumption (i.e. sugary beverages, tea and coffee, water, and milk) throughout adolescence. During the Monitoring Activi…

Open Access•François Gallant, Mario Bélanger et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Sports and Active…•2021

Notwithstanding their wide-spread use, it is unclear what level of empirical evidence exists to support sport participation and physical activity-based models. Sport participation and physical activity-based models characterize different stages of sport involvement based on sport activities (organized and unorganized) individuals take part in throughout their lifespan.
