  • Lexical Priming

Open Access•Michael Hoey, Katie J Patterson et al.•CHAPTER•Encyclopedia of Applied Linguistics•2021

Lexical priming is a linguistic theory which seeks to relate corpus‐linguistic concepts such as collocation and colligation to the experimental findings of psycholinguists interested in the retardation and acceleration of word association. In one such set of experiments informants are given a word or image (referred to as a prime) and then a target word; the speed with which the target word is recognized is measured. • Strategies of writing summaries for hard news texts

    Open Access•Li Yuan Ke, Li Ke et al.•ARTICLE•Discourse Studies•2014•Cited by: 1•References: 22

This article analyses which propositions of the original hard news texts are replicated in their summaries written by competent readers, with a view to observing the strategies they use to write summaries for this text type and analysing the linguistic devices involved when they implement the strategies. • Lexical Priming

    Open Access•Michael Hoey•CHAPTER•Encyclopedia of Applied Linguistics•2012

Lexical priming is the name given to a linguistic theory developed by Michael Hoey (in particular in Hoey, 2003, 2004a, 2005), which seeks to relate corpus‐linguistic concepts such as collocation and colligation to the experimental findings of psycholinguists interested in the retardation and acceleration of word association.

  • Lexical Priming

Lexical Priming proposes a radical new theory of the lexicon, which amounts to a completely new theory of language based on how words are used in the real world. Here they are not confined to the definitions given to them in dictionaries but instead interact with other words in common patterns of use. Using concrete statistical evidence from a corpus of newspaper English, but also referring to travel writing and literary text, the author argues t…

  • Contrastive Rhetorics

Open Access•Diane Houghton, Michael Hoey•ARTICLE•Annual Review of Applied…•1982

Considering the immense difficulty of the English language to Japanese students, the ability of some of my boys to express their thoughts in it is astonishing. Their compositions have also another interest for me as revelations, not of individual character, but of national sentiment, or of aggregate sentiment of some sort or other. What seems to me most surprising in the compositions of the average Japanese student is that they have no personal c…
