Interpersonal Construct Differentiation and Conversational Planning An Examination of Two Cognitive Accounts for the Production of Competent Verbal Disagreement Tactics
This study examines three cognition-based theoretical explanations for variations in verbal disagreement tactics. The cognitive requirements of competent message production in conflict situations are examined first. Then the relative success of (a) an individual difference explanation (based on constructivist logic), (b) a situated cognition explanation (based on planning theory), and (c) a hybrid explanation in accounting for the use of competen…

Social-Cognitive and Situational Influences on the Use of Face-Saving Persuasive Strategies
This study investigated the influences of three situational variables and interpersonal construct differentiation on the use of face-saving strategies. Speakers carried out role-play persuasive tasks that were varied on the dimensions of speaker power, request magnitude, and familiarity. The resulting messages were coded for the dominant levels of autonomy granting and positive face support provided to the target. Speakers provided more face supp…

Cognitive Differentiation and Verbal Intelligence: Clarifying Relationships
This study principally explored the interrelationship of Crockett's (1965) Role Category Questionnaire (RCQ) measure of cognitive differentiation with various measures of verbal intelligence in order to determine the extent to which the RCQ measure is confounded by verbal ability. Participants included 285 undergraduates from a large southern university. The results show the RCQ to be independent of the verbal abilities measures. Further, a signi…
The impact of construct system development on communication and impression formation in persuasive contexts 1
This study employs a constructivist approach to communication studies to investigate the impact of the differences in individuals’ cognitive complexity and construct system abstractness on development of more listener‐adaptive persuasive communication strategies. In addition, it examines the effect of such differences in construct system/strategic development on the quality of impressions formed of interaction partners. Communication measures wer…
