  • Climate Change and Mountain Topographic Evolution in the Central Karakoram, Pakistan

    Michael P Bishop, Andrew B G Bush et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of the Association of…•2010•References: 92

Mountain geodynamics represent highly scale-dependent interactions involving climate, tectonic, and surface processes. The central Karakoram in Pakistan exhibit strong climate–tectonic feedbacks, although the detailed tectonic and topographic responses to climate perturbations need to be systematically explored. This study focuses on understanding climate variations in relation to glacier erosion and relief production. Field data, climate modelin…

  • Afghanistan’s development and functionality

    Open Access•John F Shroder, John Shroder•ARTICLE•GeoJournal•2007•Cited by: 2•References: 6

Afghanistan has long been backward and underdeveloped where centuries of desertification, deforestation, overgrazing and environmental degradation have combined with successive invasions, violence, and terrorism to reduce the population to abject poverty. In the post 9/11 world, development of Afghanistan is seen as the only hope to revive the failed nation and reduce its threat to the external world. New assessments of natural resources offer ma…

  • Terrain analysis and data modeling for alpine glacier mapping

Michael P Bishop, Radoslav Bonk et al.•ARTICLE•Polar Geography•2001

We investigate the utility of object‐oriented data modeling and analysis of the topography for alpine glacier mapping at Nanga Parbat, in northern Pakistan. Results indicate that first‐ and second‐order morphometric parameters can be used to study glacier features and delineate debris‐covered glaciers. Object‐oriented data modeling using a two‐level hierarchy was found to be successful for delineating the Raikot Glacier, although a three‐level hi…

  • Integration of computer technology and interactive learning in geographic education

Michael P Bishop, John F Shroder et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Geography in Higher…•1995•Cited by: 10•References: 1

The rapid proliferation of computer technology is dramatically improving geographic instruction. However, as hardware and software technologies related to computer networks, environmental modelling, animation, multimedia and interactive learning become more available, educators must familiarise themselves with computer networks, software resources and digital data products. Technical proficiency is often critically linked to successful implementa…

  • Dendrogeomorphological Analysis of Mass Movement on Table Cliffs Plateau, Utah

    Open Access•John F Shroder•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1978

A rock glacier-year, with little evidence of long-term surges. Different parts of the slope like boulder deposit on the Table Cliffs Plateau, Utah, has moved slowly over a long period of time and has affected over 220 trees growing on it. Analyses of annual rings of trees affected by this and other slope movements show events such as inclination, shear, corrasion, burial, exposure, inundation, and nudation. Datable responses to these events are r…
