Norwegian sexualities: Assimilation and exclusion in Norwegian immigration policy
In this article, we discuss how certain sexual norms currently labeled as ‘Norwegian’ come into play in immigration policy related to marriage migrants and homosexuals who seek asylum in Norway. Our analyses indicate that discourses on sexuality in immigration politics are gendered and racialized at the Norwegian border. We discuss the continued significance of Orientalist notions that render its sexual subjects as inherently ‘different’ and supp…
Governing couple-sexuality: Publically funded couples' courses in Norway
This paper analyses the construction of Norwegian couples' sexuality through the study of a publically financed and organised relationship course called Living Well Together (Godt Samliv). Established in 2005, this relationship course aimed at first-time parent couples is offered free of charge by municipal health centres. Scrutiny of national policy documents and political debate and of the course handbooks presented to couples, makes visible a …

Staging Gender and Sexuality in Experimental TV Entertainment
Via examples from recent Norwegian experimental TV shows, this article explores the function of "eye-catchers," parodic (hetero)sexualization, female masquerade and neo-masculinization as strategies for "repetitions with a difference" of traditional styles and motifs by female show hosts, as well as the queer gendering and sexualization of men and masculinities by their male counterparts. Both formats represent innovative renegotiations of gender…
Introduction: New Forms of Intimacy
Mainstream Sexualization and the Potential for Nordic New Feminism
Processes of sexualization mark a wide range of popular and high‐cultural representations in media and culture. This trend has led to academic and public feminist debate. In this article I argue that the common polarization between the repressive and the subversive potential of sexualized representations fails to understand processes of sexualization as forms of mainstream cultural experimentation. Since the mid‐90s we have witnessed the emergenc…
Realism of Convention and Realism of Queering: Sexual Violence in two European Art Films
The article analyses two contrasting examples of representations of rape in French art films. One is Virginie Despentes and Coralie Thrin Thi's film Baise‐moi (Fuck me). The other is Caspar Noé's film Irreversible. By using these two films as examples, I wish to point out the relation between aesthetics and ideological effects by employing the deconstructive potentials of feminist and queer theory. These films are part of a European trend using e…
