  • Biodemography of Exceptional Longevity

    Leonid A Gavrilov, Natalia S Gavrilova•ARTICLE•Biodemography and Social Biology•2012•Cited by: 4•References: 94

This study explores the effects of early-life and middle-life conditions on exceptional longevity using two matched case-control studies. The first study compares 198 validated centenarians born in the United States between 1890 and 1893 to their shorter-lived siblings. Family histories of centenarians were reconstructed and exceptional longevity validated using early U.S. censuses, the Social Security Administration Death Master File, state deat…

  • Understanding the “Russian Mortality Paradox” in Central Asia

    Open Access•Michel Guillot, Natalia S Gavrilova et al.•ARTICLE•Demography•2011•Cited by: 8•References: 33

In the former Soviet republics of central Asia, ethnic Russians have exhibited higher adult mortality than native ethnic groups (e.g., Kazakh, Kyrgyz, Uzbek) in spite of the higher socioeconomic status of ethnic Russians. The mortality disadvantage of ethnic Russians at adult ages appears to have even increased since the breakup of the Soviet Union. The most common explanation for this “Russian mortality paradox,” is that deaths are better report…

  • Sex, health, and years of sexually active life gained due to good health

Open Access•Stacy Tessler Lindau, Natalia S Gavrilova et al.•ARTICLE•BMJ•2010

OBJECTIVES: To examine the relation between health and several dimensions of sexuality and to estimate years of sexually active life across sex and health groups in middle aged and older adults. DESIGN: Cross sectional study. SETTING: Two samples representative of the US population: MIDUS (the national survey of midlife development in the United States, 1995-6) and NSHAP (the national social life, health and ageing project, 2005-6). • Salivary Sex Hormone Measurement in a National, Population-Based Study of Older Adults

    Natalia S Gavrilova, N Gavrilova et al.•ARTICLE•The Journals of Gerontology…•2009•Cited by: 10•References: 4

NSHAP is the first large, population-based study of older adults to measure salivary estradiol, progesterone, dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), and, in women, testosterone. These data demonstrate a high cooperation rate with in-home salivary specimen collection from older adults and good validity of sex hormone measurements

  • Russian Mortality Crisis and the Quality of Vital Statistics

  • Early-life Predictors of Human Longevity

  • Genealogical data and the biodemography of human longevity

    Leonid A Gavrilov, Natalia S Gavrilova et al.•ARTICLE•Biodemography and Social Biology•2002•Cited by: 1•References: 61

Biodemography of human longevity is an emerging interdisciplinary field of sociobiological research with deep historical roots. Two research questions are examined in this article: (1) What evidence is there for the familial transmission of human longevity?, and (2) what are the effects of parental age at reproduction on offspring longevity, and in particular, are there long-term adverse health consequences associated with the trend toward delaye…

  • Biodemographic Study of Familial Determinants of Human Longevity

    Open Access•Natalia S Gavrilova, Leonid A Gavrilov•ARTICLE•Population•2001•Cited by: 10•References: 2

Gavrilov L.A., Gavrilova N.S.-Biodemographic Study of Familial Determinants of Human Longevity On the basis of genealogical data for European aristocratic families, this article investigates whether parental age at child conception affects progeny life span, and the possible mechanisms of familial transmission of human longevity from parents to children. The method of extinct generations was applied to individual life span (several thousand cases…

    Open Access•Natalia S Gavrilova, Natalia Gavrilova et al.•ARTICLE•Demographic Research•1999•Cited by: 1

The main cause that hampered many previous biodemographic studies of human longevity is the lack of appropriate data. At the same time, many existing data resources (millions of genealogical records) are under-utilized, because their very existence is
