Exploring system interactions for building resilience within coastal environments and communities
This paper focuses on identifying examples of first-order system interactions, which make important contributions to building coastal resilience for coastal zone management. This discussion is based on an application of the Institutional Analysis and Development Framework to a case-study analysis of coastal management in South Australia. The study suggests that cross-scale interactions and informal relationships within and between users and manag…
Exploring the challenges of integrated coastal zone management and reflecting on contributions to 'integration' from geographical thought
Integrated coastal zone management (ICZM) is a challenging process, defined by stakeholder engagement and underpinned by knowledge on the integrated behaviour of coastal systems. While significant advancements in ICZM have been made, a range of difficult and important questions about 'integration' remain to be explored. This paper discusses opportunities for addressing such challenges of integration through the application of geographical thinkin…
Coastal Vulnerability as Discourse About Meanings and Values
This paper argues that any approach to defining vulnerability is a social act, and is expressive of and grounded in some assumptions about the nature and purpose of language. Managing a complex environment such as the coastal zone is necessarily about choice and conflicts. A purpose of language is to persuade others to adopt the course of action that the individual or group consider should be adopted. In consequence, the definitions of vulnerabil…
