Global Commodities
Focusing on coca, coffee, gold, soy, sugar, and tea, articles in a special issue of the Austrian Journal of Historical Studies 30/3 (2019) on Global Commodities aim at tracing the emergence of commodity chains through the expansion and contraction of commodity frontiers. Frontier shifts imply complex – and potentially conflicting – interactions shaped by as well as shaping socio-natural systems. Thus, the contributions reveal commodity chains and…
Broadening and Deepening
This article assesses the ongoing South American soy expansion from a world-historical perspective, comparing the case of Brazil with the cases of China and the USA. For this purpose, it applies the concept of commodity frontier, involving both external and internal modes of capitalist incorporation. The Chinese soy expansion (1900s–1930s) shows a predominant shift of the external frontier, associated with the peasant mode of farming. The US soy …

In rund 30 Beiträgen akzentu…
The Soy paradox
The article addresses the Western nutrition transition from the mid-twentieth century onwards through the lens of soy. The soybean and its products have mostly been neglected in accounts of the nutrition transition. If anything, the soybean appears as an antagonist of the nutrition transition. The article argues that soy simultaneously played an opposite - though less obvious - role as a protagonist of the nutrition transition. As both antagonist…
Wachsen, Weichen, Weitermachen
Wirtschaften mit Stil
The ‘death of the peasantry’ through conversion into either farmers or labourers in the decades after the Second World War is a widely established topos in current historiography. However, this account underestimates the multitude of farm development pathways between the extremes of accumulation and proletarianization. By drawing on Jan Douwe van der Ploeg’s concept of farming styles, the article discusses theoretical and methodological tools sui…

Dorfgeschichte als reflexiver Prozeß
The Rise and Fall of a Local Hero
The article questions abstract concepts like lieux de mémoire, invented tradition and imagined communities linked to a concrete field of research. It reconstructs structures and practices of the cultural representation of mythical narrations in symbolic and social spaces. The case of a rural community in Austria after World War II shows that the encoding and decoding of a heroic saga is embedded both in the macro structures of the economic and po…
