  • Family Instability in Childhood and Criminal Offending During the Transition Into Adulthood

    Open Access•Stacey J Bosick, P Fomby•ARTICLE•American Behavioral Scientist•2018•Cited by: 4•References: 29

The structure and stability of families have long stood as key predictors of juvenile delinquency. Boys from "broken homes" experience a higher prevalence of juvenile delinquency than those from intact families. Unresolved is whether the consequences of frequently disrupted family contexts endure to shape criminal trajectories into adulthood. Long-term influence may also be indirect. Life-course criminologists credit family formation during the t…

  • Boomeranging” and Delinquent Behavior in Emerging Adulthood: A Person-Centered Approach to Studying Role Change

    Open Access•Jessica M Hill, Stacey J Bosick•ARTICLE•Emerging Adulthood•2017

Role change is a central feature of the transition to adulthood. These transitions are not always linear. It is unclear whether “boomeranging” back into dependent roles is problematic to later life outcomes or represents healthy role exploration. Using a person-centered approach, we explore whether role dependence (remaining in dependent roles), role progression (movement into independent roles), or role boomeranging (moving from independent to d…

  • Pushed Out on My Own: The Impact of Hurricane Katrina in the Lives of Low-income Emerging Adults

    Open Access•Stacey J Bosick, Taro Fujita et al.•ARTICLE•Sociological Perspectives•2015•Cited by: 4•References: 30

Drawing on life-history interviews, this study explores the impact of Hurricane Katrina in the lives of 57 low-income, African American mothers who were 20-31 years old at the time of the storm. Hurricane Katrina massively disrupted the social networks upon which these mothers relied to facilitate life transitions and make ends meet. The literature would predict that the loss of these important supports would hinder the respondents' transition-to…

This entry reviews leading research on the relationship between the maturation to adulthood and crime. It highlights biological and neurological perspectives and then outlines sociological work on the role of life events and cognitive shifts. Research positioned at the intersection of biology and sociology is also reviewed. The entry concludes by discussing what this research implies about the way young offenders are handled in the criminal justi…

  • Family Instability and the Transition to Adulthood

    Open Access•P Fomby, Stacey J Bosick•ARTICLE•Journal of Marriage and the Family•2013•Cited by: 37•References: 62

Children's experience of repeated family structure change has a robust association with compromised development across the early life course. Implicit in prior research is the expectation that disparities in cognition and behavior accumulate through childhood and adolescence to influence the transition to adulthood. The authors assessed the association of early and later family structure instability with events in the transition to adulthood up t…
