    This article will examine ethnic relations in the countryside as a cause of rural/urban migration among the Maya Indians of western Guatemala and will question the inevitability of such migration by looking at a contrasting course of development among the Maya of southern Mexico. Comparison of Zinacantan in Mexico and Aguacatán in Guatemala suggests that rural development may be an alternative to migration to cities, but only if such development …

    This article examines the evolution of the traditionalism-modernism model in Latin America and critically reviews several recent tests in the region that appear to suggest that the typology should be revised as a theoretical system explaining social change.     The demographic correlates of modernization were studied in a municipio of the Guatemalan highlands using, as indicators of modernization, the introduction of chemical fertilizers and of a religous revitalization movement.
