Folklife on the Air
Since at least the 1940s, producers of radio material have drawn on traditions and community anchors to appeal to listeners. Sometimes radio programs were produced by and for communities themselves, sometimes to engage broader audiences. The American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress has acquired a range of collections over the past several decades connected to radio programming anchored in cultural heritage materials. In this essay, sev…
Audiovisual Archives
This chapter provides an account of several audiovisual dissemination activities of the Federal Cylinder Project and the American Folklife Center since the 1970s. Institutional protocols, developed in consultation with tribal advisors, shaped early outreach by the archive to Native communities, as did cooperative efforts with other federal agencies. Benjamin Lloyd's Hymn Book
While Benjamin Lloyd (1804-1860) may not be known to many of us, the nineteenth-century Baptist pastor, merchant, land speculator, church and public official, plantation owner, and father of nineteen children continues to have an effect upon the lives and religious expressions of Primitive Baptist families and congregations. information on the context of song performance buried in the text. For example, we learn that the Oglala like their songs short (p. 57), that singers may practice for a performance by whistling a song (p. 58), that the sound of the mouth organ is likened to the noise of prairie dogs (p. 67), and that songs are created in the springtime during vision quests (p. 7). There is no overall discussion of performance or context, however, and I was left f…
The Law of Entropy and Dance
Have you ever wondered what distinguishes dance movement from random motion of the human body? To what degree is ordered or organized motion necessary for communication through dance? The Second Law of Thermodynamics deals with order and disorder, probabilities and tendencies, in physical systems. Can analogies drawn from this physical principle contribute something to our understanding of the nature and meaning of dance? The Second Law of Thermo…
