The association between out-of-home mobility and internet use patterns among people aged 60 and older
The internet is seen as a medium that enables older individuals with limited out-of-home mobility (OOHM) to maintain independence and social connections, but little attention has been given to their internet use so far. Utilising a previously developed typology of non-, basic-, selective- and allround internet users, aged 60 and above, and drawing on data from the Belgian Ageing Studies (N = 2,788), we examined the association between OOHM and in…
Multi-dimensional frailty and Oral Health-Related Quality-of-Life in older adults: A cross-sectional study
Comprehensive frailty assessment allows us to map various dimensions of frailty and the impact they have on OHRQoL
First generation concept in the context of a Flemish university in Brussels – Europe
The association between internet non-use and multidimensional frailty in older adults: A three-wave cross-sectional study from 2004 to 2021
This study examined the association between frailty and internet (non-)use, using representative data – collected between 2004 and 2021 – of community dwelling people aged 60 and older living in Flanders, Belgium (N = 43,048). Multidimensional frailty was measured by the Comprehensive Frailty Assessment Instrument (CFAI), which is a reliable and valid instrument to assess physical, psychological, social and environmental dimensions of frailty. In…
Inequalities in internet use among older people between 2004 and 2021: Examining the cumulative impact of sociodemographic characteristics on internet non-use
Although research already examined sociodemographic profiles of older internet (non-)users, it is unknown how combinations of sociodemographic factors relate to internet (non-)use. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the cumulative impact of sociodemographic characteristics on internet (non-)use among people aged 60 and older between 2004 and 2021, using representative survey data derived from the Belgian Ageing Studies (n = 61 376). Logist…
How can we develop a well-supported policy plan? Towards a cocreative development of a new informal care policy plan in Flanders: Process and research results
In Belgium, there is a growing awareness about the importance of informal carers to cover persons' care and support needs. In the last decades several efforts were made in order to support informal carers, reduce levels of burden and enhance quality of life. In 2016, Flanders launched the Flemish informal care policy plan 2016-2020, which was created to valorise and support informal carers in the Dutch speaking part of Belgium and in Brussels. Th…
Care and support for older people with intellectual disabilities beyond the pursuit of ageing ‘in place’: Towards constructing a space to be(long)
Whereas population ageing has been a much debated issue over the last decades, the political and scientific awareness of the longevity of adults with intellectual disabilities is considered relatively new. When the situations of older people with intellectual disabilities are coming into focus, attention has especially been drawn to medical aspects or to expected challenges of their ageing for health and social service providers. In that vein, a …
Characterizing fall risk factors in Belgian older adults through machine learning: A data-driven approach
The present study identified 24 fall risk factors using machine learning techniques to identify older adults at high risk of falling. Maintaining a mental, physical and socially active lifestyle, reducing vulnerability and feeling satisfied with the living situation contributes to reducing the risk of falling. Further research is warranted to establish an easy-to-use screening tool to be applied in daily practice
Giving voice to informal caregivers of community‐dwelling older adults: A systematic review of empowerment interventions
Social participation among older adults in Belgium’s Flanders region: Exploring the roles of both new and old media usage
The media usage of older adults aged 60 and above in the twenty-first century information society is gaining increasing research attention. This research investigates the association between two important aspects in later life, media usage and social participation, among 36,282 home-dwelling adults aged 60 and above in over 138 municipalities of Belgium’s Flanders region. The data are collected through a participatory research method, in which ol…
Social Participation in the Daily Lives of Frail Older Adults: Types of Participation and Influencing Factors
Findings advance our knowledge and recognition of the different ways frail older adults participate in society. Despite their frailty, older adults wish to stay socially active. Focusing on the social environment in the frameworks and policies of Age-Friendly Cities and Communities will benefit these individuals
Detecting frail, older adults and identifying their strengths: Results of a mixed-methods study
The findings indicate that frailty among older individuals can be considered as a dynamic state and, regardless of frailty, balancing factors are important in maintaining a good QoL. The study investigated not only the deficits, but also the abilities, and resources of frail, older adults. Public policymakers and healthcare organizations are encouraged to include these abilities, supplementary or even complementary to the usual focus on deficits

Socio-demographic, socio-economic and health need differences between types of care use in community-dwelling older adults
This article aims to identify relations between socio-demographic/socio-economic characteristics and the use of informal and formal care. All analyses were performed on data from the Belgian Ageing Studies, a survey among community-dwelling older people (60+) in Belgium. Latent class analyses were used to identify types of care use and bivariate analyses were used to assess differences within these types. Eight different types were identified. Re…

Refining the push and pull framework: Identifying inequalities in residential relocation among older adults
Older people consider moving home when there is a discrepancy between actual and desired living conditions. This study builds on the classic push and pull framework described in the early work of Lee and Wiseman by identifying whether or not individual differences among older people can be predictive for certain push and pull reasons (such as housing, health, neighbourhood and social contact). On the basis of data from the Belgian Ageing Studies …
The Multiperspectivity of the Integrated Care Model
As a worldwide trend in health care and social care, new organizational arrangements and care perspectives focus on more coordinated and integrated forms of care.Based upon a framework of human rights and social justice, an innovative Integrated Care Model is developed within health and social care (IC-model). This framework is acknowledged in both scientific papers (Lloyd & Wait, 2005) and international policy documents, including WHO-declaratio…
Social participation among older adults living in medium-sized cities in Belgium: The role of neighbourhood perceptions
This study examines the associations between neighbourhood perceptions and social participation in a sample of older adults living in medium-sized cities in Flanders, Belgium. Strong evidence of the influence of place on older people's physical and mental health exists. However, the question of how neighbourhoods promote or hinder social participation remains under-explored in social gerontology. Using data generated from the Belgian Ageing Studi…
Place Attachment Among Older Adults Living in Four Communities in Flanders, Belgium
There is strong evidence that age brings an increasing attachment to social and physical environments. However, the extent to which the experience of place attachment may vary between different types of locations remains underexplored in ageing research. Using a mixed-method approach consisting of two consecutive phases, this article aims to identify contextual factors that either promote or impede older people's attachment to place. In the first…

Theorising the relationship between older people and their immediate social living environment
This article presents a theoretical framework for exploring the dynamics between older people and their immediate social living environment. After introducing a gerontological perspective that goes beyond microfication, a literature review presents findings from studies that have explored the role of place and locality for older people. Next, this contribution seeks to broaden the conceptual field by introducing key dimensions of the relationship…

Perceptual quality of neighbourhood design and feelings of unsafety
This paper takes the quality of life in the neighbourhood as a starting point and appeals to the framework of Age-friendly Cities to gain insights in how ‘the neighbourhood as a physical surrounding’ can either promote or hinder feelings of unsafety in later life. It examines the impact of the perceived design of the neighbourhood on feelings of unsafety in later life. Literature on the relationship between feelings of unsafety and the neighbourh…

Physical environmental factors related to walking and cycling in older adults: The Belgian aging studies
Urban residents were more likely to walk for transportation daily compared to semi-urban and rural residents. Daily cycling for transportation was less prevalent among urban compared to semi-urban residents. Access to destinations appeared to be important for promoting both walking and cycling for transportation and recreation across all demographic subgroups. Additionaly, feelings of unsafety were associated with lower rates of walking for trans…
