The Alcohol Use Disorder and Associated Disabilities Interview Schedule-IV (Audadis-IV)
Age at First Drink and the First Incidence of Adult‐Onset DSM‐IV Alcohol Use Disorders
Background: Existing studies of the association between age at first drink (AFD) and the risk of alcohol use disorders (AUD) suffer from inconsistent levels of control and designs that may inflate associations by failure to control for duration of exposure to risk. Methods: This study examined associations between AFD (ages n = 22,316), controlling for duration of exposure, family history, and a wide range of baseline and childhood risk factors. …
Recovery from DSM‐IV alcohol dependence
Aims To investigate the prevalence and correlates of recovery from Diagnostic and Statistical Manual version IV (DSM‐IV) alcohol dependence by examining the past‐year status of individuals who met the criteria for prior‐to‐past‐year (PPY) dependence. Design Cross‐sectional, retrospective survey of a nationally representative sample of US adults 18 years of age and over (first wave of a planned longitudinal survey). Methods This analysis is based …
Effectiveness of the Derived Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (Audit-C) in Screening for Alcohol Use Disorders and Risk Drinking in the US General Population
BACKGROUND: The three consumption questions from the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT-C) are increasingly used as a screener for alcohol use disorders (AUDs) and risk drinking. METHODS: In a representative sample of US adults 18 years of age and older, AUDIT-C scores (derived from consumption questions embedded in a large national survey) were used to estimate sensitivity, specificity, and areas under receiver operator characteris…
Nicotine Dependence and Psychiatric Disorders in the United States
BACKGROUND: No information is available on the co-occurrence of DSM-IV nicotine dependence and Axis I and II psychiatric disorders in the US population. OBJECTIVES: To present national data on the co-occurrence of current DSM-IV nicotine dependence and other psychiatric disorders by sex and to estimate the burden of all US tobacco consumption carried by nicotine-dependent and psychiatrically ill individuals. DESIGN: Face-to-face interviews. SETTI…
Prevalence and Co-occurrence of Substance Use Disorders and IndependentMood and Anxiety Disorders
BACKGROUND: Uncertainties exist about the prevalence and comorbidity of substance use disorders and independent mood and anxiety disorders. OBJECTIVE: To present nationally representative data on the prevalence and comorbidity of DSM-IV alcohol and drug use disorders and independent mood and anxiety disorders (including only those that are not substance induced and that are not due to a general medical condition). DESIGN: Face-to-face survey. SET…
The 12-month prevalence and trends in DSM-IV alcohol abuse and dependence
Immigration and Lifetime Prevalence of DSM-IV PsychiatricDisorders Among Mexican Americans and Non-Hispanic Whites in the United States
BACKGROUND: There exist no national prevalence data on specific DSM-IV Axis I psychiatric disorders among foreign-born and US-born Mexican Americans and non-Hispanic whites. OBJECTIVE: To present nationally representative data on the prevalence of DSM-IV lifetime psychiatric disorders among foreign-born and US-born Mexican Americans and non-Hispanic whites. DESIGN: Face-to-face survey conducted in the 2001-2002 National Epidemiologic Survey on Al…

Age at onset of alcohol use and its association with DSM-IV alcohol abuse and dependence
Alcohol and drug use, abuse, and dependence among welfare recipients
OBJECTIVES: This paper presents national estimates of heavy drinking, drug use, and alcohol and drug abuse and/or dependence among recipients of selected welfare programs. METHODS: Data from the 1992 National Longitudinal Alcohol Epidemiologic Survey were analyzed. RESULTS: The percentages of welfare recipients using, abusing, or dependent on alcohol or drugs were relatively small and consistent with the general US population and those not receiv…
What if Americans drank less? The potential effect on the prevalence of alcohol abuse and dependence
OBJECTIVES. Several advisory committees have recently recommended that alcohol consumption be limited to moderate levels. Moderate drinking has been defined generally as not more than two drinks per day for healthy men and not more than one drink per day for healthy, nonpregnant women. The impact of reducing alcohol consumption to within the recommended guidelines on the prevalence of two serious alcohol-related problems was examined by modeling …

HIV antibody testing among adults in the United States
Data collected from 21,168 adults using the 1988 AIDS supplement to the National Health Interview Survey were examined to determine awareness of and experience with HIV antibody testing in the United States. Three-fourths of adults knew of the blood test for HIV antibodies; awareness was lower among Blacks, Hispanics, older adults, and those less educated. Overall, 17 percent of adults had been tested; of these, 73 percent because of blood donati…
Ethnic differences in female overweight
Ethnic differences in female overweight were analyzed using data from the 1985 National Health Interview Survey. The sample consisted of approximately 17,000 women, ages 18 and over. After adjusting for age and poverty status, there were clear differences in the proportions of women 20 per cent or more overweight among Black, Hispanic and other White women (35, 26 and 20 per cent, respectively). Black women were less likely than White women to pe…
Trends in routine screening examinations
Data from the 1973 and 1982 National Health Interview Surveys reveal increased use of routine medical examinations between the two survey dates. The proportion of adults age 40 or older who ever had a glaucoma test increased by 50 per cent. Other large increases were in the proportion of adults age 40 or older who ever had an electrocardiogram and in the proportions of women age 17 or older who ever had breast examinations or Pap smears
