Gendered Rural Housing Pathways of Women Exiting Patriarchal Families. Empowerment Strategies of Working‐Class Rural Stayers in Poland
This article examines the gendered pathways of rural housing among working‐class women who have left patriarchal family relations (through divorce or escape from violence) while remaining in the local worlds of traditional villages. The impact of these pioneering housing pathways on the transformation of rural gender relations is explored. The analysis is based on qualitative research conducted in eastern Poland, one of the most conservative and …
It takes a village to get divorced: Gender, class, location-specific capital, and solidarity in conservative rural communities of Eastern Poland
This article explores the ways in which working class women in Eastern Poland navigate divorce in post-agricultural Catholic rural communities. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork conducted between 2018 and 2022 and 30 autobiographical narratives, I introduce the concept of ‘gendered location-specific capital of the rural working class’. This framework provides a new lens for examining how place and locality intersect with rural working-class dispo…

From Hegemonic to Hybrid and Back? The Context-Adaptive Masculinity of Polish Male Migrants
The article aims to address the complexity of the models of masculinity (re)produced in the transnational context and explain the role of religion in this process. It draws on qualitative research conducted among religiously committed Catholic male migrants from Poland who have settled in multicultural and secular societies: England, Belgium, and Sweden. The transnational context often makes it difficult for migrant men to practice hegemonic masc…
Women away from the altar! Resistance to the gender equality pressures in the Polish organisations of the Catholic Church in England, Sweden, and Belgium
This article examines the practices that maintain the gender asymmetry in transnational migratory religious organisations, as exemplified by the Polish organisations of the Roman Catholic Church (so-called Polish Catholic Missions). Based on interviews with women and men involved in these structures as well as on our observations during fieldwork, we reconstruct the gendered division of work in such organisations, with a special focus on differen…
Bargaining with gendered egalitarianism. A transnational compensatory patriarchy in Polish Catholic Missions in England, Belgium, Sweden
The article examines the transformations of masculine formal (ordained) power in the Polish migrant religious organisations of the Roman Catholic Church. Based on qualitative in-depth interviews with 97 transmigrant women and men (consecrated and lay activists) involved in 14 Polish Catholic Mission organisations in England, Belgium and Sweden, the article gives an insight into various criticisms of patterns of priests’ patriarchal power in the P…
Prawdziwi mężczyźni Boga” w „szatańskich miastach”. Religia i hybrydyczna męskość polskich migrantów w Anglii, Belgii i Szwecji
Weapons of the weak twisted in jars of love. The transnational maternal foodways of Polish migrants in Brussels
The aim of the article is to analyse social change in the area of the gendered care practices and identities of migrant mothers, who were forced by the social and economic situation in Poland to (illegally) work abroad without their children and families. It asks what kind of experiences of social change we can find if we look at the foodways practised by transnational mothers from the working classes. The concepts of 'transnational maternal food…
Gender, Families, Social Change, and the Rural–Urban Discourse: The Polish Peasant in Europe and America” as a Study of Fears and Fantasies Related to Modernisation
The aim of this article is to reread The Polish Peasant in Europe and America as a representation of the fears and modernisation fantasies of its era. I analyse the patterns of gendered family relations and ideals of femininity and masculinity constructed by Thomas and Znaniecki within the framework of rural–urban discourses. As I will show, in The Polish Peasant we find huge contradictions between the liberal and conservative perspectives presen…
Is Apostasy from a Family Possible? The Apostasy from an Alcoholic-Abusive Family as a Variant of (Un)Becoming a Daughter – the Case of Natalia
An analysis of the biography of Natalia, a former resident of a Polish children’s home who, at the age of thirteen, voluntarily left her biological, dysfunctional family, aims to address a question which is fundamental, but rarely asked by the sociologists of family. Is it possible to completely quit a relation with one’s family of origin? What identity and biographical consequences does such a decision imply? This article consists of two parts. …
