Solving categorical syllogisms with singular premises
We elaborate on the approach to syllogistic reasoning based on “case identification” (Stenning & Oberlander, 1995 Stenning, K. and Oberlander, J. 1995. A cognitive theory of graphical and linguistic reasoning: Logic and implementation. Cognitive Science, 19: 97–140. [Crossref], [Web of Science ®] , [Google Scholar]; Stenning & Yule, 1997 Stenning, K. and Yule, P. 1997. Image and language in human reasoning: A syllogistic illustration. Cognitive P…
A Developmental Investigation of Processing Costs in Implicature Production
Much developmental work has been devoted to scalar implicatures. These are implicitly communicated propositions linked to relatively weak terms (consider how Some pragmatically implies Not all) that are more likely to be carried out by adults than by children. Children tend to retain the linguistically encoded meaning of these terms (wherein Some is compatible with All). In three experiments, we gauge children's performance with scalars while inv…
The Psychological Reality of Classical Quantifier Entailment Properties
A test of directional entailment properties of classical quantifiers defined by the theory of generalized quantifiers (Barwise & Cooper 1981) is described. Participants had to solve a task which consisted of four kinds of inference. In the first one, the premise was of the form ‘Q–hyponym–verb–blank predicate’, where Q is a classical quantifier (e.g. ‘Some cats are [ ]’), and the question was to indicate what, if anything, can be concluded by fil…
The psychology of dynamic probability judgment: Order effect, normative theories, and experimental methodology
Is the mind Bayesian? The case for agnosticism
Deductive reasoning from uncertain conditionals
This paper begins with a review of the literature on plausible reasoning with deductive arguments containing a conditional premise. There is concurring evidence that people presented with valid conditional arguments such as Modus Ponens and Modus Tollens generally do not endorse the conclusion, but rather find it uncertain, in case (1) the plausibility of the major conditional premise is debatable, (2) the major conditional premise is formulated …
Reasoning and pragmatics
Contract Proposals: A Sketch of a Grammar
In this paper we analyse the way in which contract proposals can be expressed in order to be considered as well formed. We limit ourselves to a micro-world containing two parties in interaction (a Speaker and a Hearer), and two utility values (positive and negative) attached to the exchanged goods. A contract is defined as well formed if the exchange would result in an increase in utility for both parties. In that micro-world, 64 forms of contrac…
A pragmatic account of a presuppositional effect
Are conjunction rule violations the result of conversational rule violations
Comparison of Deductive Abilities Across Language
In order to study possible differential effects of language on reasoning and to control educational factors, bilingual subjects of two linguistic origins (Chinese and South Indian) studying in the same university were asked to solve two-term deductions between quantified sentences in their second language (English or Malay). No systematic differences were observed between subjects whose native languages were different nor between subjects reasoni…
