This paper addresses imbalances affecting world heritage sites in terms of how well conserved they are and what resources are available for their valorisation. The authors propose a policy mechanism of global governance divided into three steps. The first is a tax mechanism based on collecting resources from tourist activities and redistributing these resources at a regional level. The second step is meant to ensure an objective approach to measu…

Walter Santagata•CHAPTER•Handbook of the economics of art…•2006

  • Creativity, fashion and market behavior

    Walter Santagata•CHAPTER•Cultural Industries And The…•2004

Creativity-based goods are among the most specialized of all goods. Creativity, like culture, is profoundly rooted both in time and in space. The culture of creativity, or its inherited capital, is inextricably linked to a place, or – in a social sense – to a community and its history. As far as creativity is concerned, time and space matter.

The purpose of this article is to analyse the economic properties as well as the institutions governing the start-up and evolution of cultural districts. The first part of the article reviews the relationships between culture, viewed as an idiosyncratic good, and the theory of industrial districts. The second part comprises a critical discussion of four models of cultural districts: the industrial cultural district (mainly based on positive exter…

In addition, some preliminary results from a survey on Italian politicians' beliefs are illustrated. • Industrial Mobility in the Turin Metropolitan Area, 1961-77

    Open Access•Guido Ortona, Walter Santagata•ARTICLE•Urban Studies•1983•References: 8

A survey of 410 plant relocations and branch plant creations in the Turin Metropolitan Area is used to formulate a model of the timing and spatial incidence of manufacturing change. Entrepreneurs' expectations about growth or decline are seen as determining the rate of anticipated movement but land use policies and the state of industrial relations may act as constraints on the process. The actual rates of movement over the period 1961-77 are reg…
