From the Field to the Factory Floor
This essay discusses Vietnamese labor migration to Czechoslovakia before 1990. Specifically, it focuses on the contentious issue of assigning Vietnamese workers to jobs in agriculture, forestry, and construction, which both Vietnamese workers and the state found objectionable because they required outdoor work, did not allow workers to acquire factory job skills, and paid poorly. Recalcitrant Women: Internationalism and the Redefinition of Welfare Limits in the Czechoslovak-Vietnamese Labor Exchange Program
In this article, I analyze changes in the Czechoslovak-Vietnamese labor exchange program between 1967 and 1989, specifically Czechoslovak state policies toward pregnant Vietnamese workers. In the program, the Czechoslovak state's commitment to being a welfare provider was confronted with its commitment to socialist internationalism. The policies toward pregnant Vietnamese workers constituted a part of the process through which the Czechoslovak st…

Current literature sees expressions of popular racism in twentieth-century European state-socialist societies either as directly deriving from the official ideology of the state or else as happening despite it. This article argues that the ways in which Vietnamese workers were racialised in 1980s Czechoslovakia were neither directly derived from the state's official ideology, nor did they arise in opposition to that ideology. Instead, it suggests…
The Learned Brāhmen, Who Assists Me: Changing Colonial Relationships in the 18th and 19th Century India
This article examines the process through which the varied and fluid relationships between English East India Company servants and Indians in the eighteenth-century transformed into rigidly racist ones in the nineteenth. At the outset, the Company's position in India was precarious and impossible to sustain without intensive help from various Indian elites and experts. Relationships created through these collaborative ties were often (but not alw…
