  • Social Influence, Self-Referent Identity Labels, and Behavior

    Open Access•Bruce J Biddle, Barbara J Bank et al.•ARTICLE•Sociological Quarterly•1985•Cited by: 8•References: 55

Self-referent identity labels are frequently argued to be a central component of the self and to be important in the planning of conduct. Despite the attractiveness of this argument, relatively little research has yet appeared that supports it, and studies of the etiology and effects of self-referent labels often fail to control for the confounding effects of preferences, norms. or other conceptions that are known to affect conduct. In this paper…

Malaysian and Australian University students were tested with thematic, or abstract content on two tasks: (a) selection task, and (b) classification task (which tested subjects' understanding of impli…

  • Normative, Preferential, and Belief Modes in Adolescent Prejudice

    Open Access•Barbara J Bank, Bruce J Biddle et al.•ARTICLE•Sociological Quarterly•1977•References: 9

The concept of attitude often subsumes normative, preferential, and belief components; some attitude scales are composed of items exhibiting two or more of these modalities. Beliefs may, in turn, be classified as reports, stereotypes, consequences, and intentions. This article shows that attitude questions in different modes have differing origins and implications, and that it is an error to continue to use an attitude concept and attitude scales…

Immediate improvements were obtained after training, but other untrained c…

After pretesting in one language, they were trained in the acquisition of the concept of weight using the other, then posttested in the …
