  • The metaphors of crises

    Daniele Besomi•ARTICLE•Journal of Cultural Economy•2019•Cited by: 2•References: 14

Metaphors, analogies, and other figures of speech are ubiquitous, and far from being mere ornaments they have heuristic, illustrative, analytical, methodological, or epistemological roles in scientific discourse. The present paper offers the prolegomena to a metaphorology of economic crises and business cycles, from the perspective of an historian of economic thought. The paper traces a general historical outline of the usage of metaphors applied …

  • Louis-Amable Petit and the 19th Century Literature on Crises and Cycles

    Open Access•Daniele Besomi•ARTICLE•OEconomia•2012•References: 5

This paper discusses the theory of crises propounded by Louis-Amable Petit (1868) in the context of the state of similar theories in the second half of the 19th century. An adversary of Say’s law, Petit offered an endogenous explanation of crises based on the fluctuations of the part of income consumed, as opposed to a persistent incentive to expand production. While the almost universal approach to the problem at the time interpreted crises as a…

  • Louis-Amable Petit and the 19th Century Literature on Crises and Cycles

    Open Access•Daniele Besomi•ARTICLE•OEconomia•2012

  • Auguste Ott on Commercial Crises and Distributive Justice

Daniele Besomi, Giorgio Colacchio•ARTICLE•Review of Political Economy•2009•Cited by: 2•References: 2

In 1851 the French Social economist Auguste Ott discussed the problem of gluts and commercial crises, together with the issue of distributive justice between workers in co-operative societies. He did so by means of a ‘simple reproduction scheme’ sharing some features with modern intersectoral transactions tables, in particular in terms of their graphical representation. This paper presents Ott's theory of crises (which was based on the disappoint…

On this question, various and contradictory opinions have been formed; and if the notorious fact of the public distress has united the sentiments of all parties on this single point, they seem to differ as widely as ever in their judgments as to the causes of it.[Anonymous, 1816, p. 375] Introduction: of continents and islands Until recently, the writings of Clément Juglar had not been much read or cited first hand (hopefully this issue will cont…

  • Marxism Gone Mad’

    Daniele Besomi•ARTICLE•Review of Political Economy•2006•Cited by: 2•References: 10

Tugan-Baranovsky's theory of crises has two components: a theory of markets, defining the condition under which expanded reproduction can take place, and a theory of crises proper, explaining how any rupture of equilibrium is amplified and extended to the whole system and gives rise to periodical fluctuations. The former, based on the Marxian schemes of reproduction, is logically preliminary to the latter, which relies on the accumulation and dep…
