Powering the pluriverse: Possibilities and limits to decolonial energy transitions in the Sierra Norte de Puebla, Mexico
In the face of the genocidal and ecocidal trajectory of climate change and “green” climate change solutions, overcoming the coloniality embodied in energy regimes is of the utmost importance. Because energy regimes are co-constitutive of power structures, energy transitions present opportunities to challenge and transform power structures of domination into more liberatory configurations of power. The 'Green War: Geopolitical Metabolism and Green Extractivisms
Through ‘green transitions’ and ‘climate action’, geopolitical actors seem to be vying for dominance based on justifications that articulate geopolitical, economic, and ecological concerns. This ‘Green War’ geopolitical framing advances and consolidates imperial power through policies seeking to promote and secure ‘low carbon technology’ and ‘critical minerals’ supply chains, intensifying what we see as a novel ‘geopolitical metabolism’. Whereas …
Proyectos de muerte and proyectos de vida: Indigenous counter-hegemonic praxis to sustainable development in the Sierra Norte de Puebla, Mexico
Nahua and Totonakú activists in the Sierra Norte de Puebla, Mexico, have challenged the state-sanctioned and corporate-driven imposition of small hydropower projects as sustainable development. They deploy a counter-hegemonic discourse that labels these projects as proyectos de muerte that perpetuate violence and rearticulate coloniality. Simultaneously, they engage in proyectos de vida that build an alternative future premised on Indigenous resu…
Mythical Islands of Value: Free Ports, Offshore Capitalism, and Art Capital
The Geneva Free Port in Switzerland has paved the way for a new generation of art and luxury free ports. These are critical spatial pivots for the management of art assets, including storage and transactions of artworks, and serve as proxy to examine mechanisms for the capture and generation of value, integral but also outside the global art market. Drawing from the trajectory of the Geneva Free Port and an interdisciplinary body of scholarship o…
