  • Pliny the Elder’s discourse on Roman gold mining

    Open Access•Javier Fernández-Lozano, Enrique Ferrari•ARTICLE•Humanities and Social Sciences…•2026

Book XXXIII of Naturalis Historia by Pliny the Elder is the most comprehensive compendium of Roman gold mining in the 1st century. For an interdisciplinary in-depth study of the text, this work combines discourse analysis with a geological examination of the Latin author’s references. First, it frames Pliny’s allusions to mining through rhetorical devices—two figures of speech—that he uses to link them to his anthropology and the naturalist motiv…

  • The mid‐latitude hydrolaccolith of the Spanish Central System (Southern Europe)

Open Access•Javier Fernández-Lozano, Valentí Turú et al.•ARTICLE•Land Degradation and Development•2024

Permafrost study in the Spanish Central System (~41°N) has remained elusive in past decades. Although numerous periglacial features have been described, none has yielded conclusive information about the existence/distribution of permafrost across these mountains. This work focuses on integrating light detection and ranging and unmanned aerial vehicle data with geophysical methods and sedimentary records, along with preliminary thermal information…

  • Glacial geomorphology of the High Gredos Massif

    Open Access•Rosa M Carrasco, Rodrigo L Soteres et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2020

We present a detailed geomorphological map of the landform assemblages originated by the two major paleoglaciers of the Sierra de Gredos mountain range in the Spanish Iberian Central System. Based on previous works, our map focused on the features formed by Gredos and Pinar paleoglaciers during the last glaciation and subsequent glacial events. Based on a remote sensing analysis and exhaustive field surveys, we identified with great accuracy the …
