Late Pleistocene aeolian reactivation in coastal barriers of southern Brazil
Building techniques and materials for 500-year-old long-lived earth monuments
The response of a dune succession from Lençóis Maranhenses, NE Brazil, to climate changes between MIS 3 and MIS 2
The Valo Grande Channel in the Cananéia-Iguape Estuary-Lagoon Complex (Sp, Brazil)
The channel of the Valo Grande (VG) in the Ribeira de Iguape River (São Paulo State, Brazil), inaugurated in 1852, is one of the largest environmental disasters in the Brazilian coast. This article presents a synthesis of the historical, ecological, geographic and sociopolitical dimensions involving the VG. The VG has promoted the ecosystem disrupting and the landscape reconfiguration of Cananéia-Iguape estuary-lagoon complex. Studies have also i…
Weakening of northeast trade winds during the Heinrich stadial 1 event recorded by dune field stabilization in tropical Brazil
The identification, characterization, and mapping of large areas of stabilized eolian features along the tropical northeastern Brazilian coast enabled recognition of the existence of one of the largest Quaternary dune fields (16,000 km 2 ) in South America. This paleodune system is observed inland of the Lençóis Maranhenses transgressive dune field (2.5°S, 43°W) and comprises deflation plains, stabilized parabolic dunes, and barchanoid chains dev…
Millennial to secular time-scale impacts of climate and sea-level changes on mangroves from the Doce River delta, Southeastern Brazil
This work integrates geomorphological, sedimentological, and palynological data with radiocarbon dating, as well as δ 13 C, δ 15 N, and C/N from sedimentary organic matter to provide a model of mangrove dynamics during the evolution of a wave-dominated delta in Southeastern Brazil. Mangrove dynamics are analyzed within the context of millennial and secular climatic and sea-level changes. Tidal flats, positioned at highest limit of the intertidal …
Radarfacies and sedimentological analysis
Integrated results of GPR (Ground Penetrating Radar) and sedimentological analysis are presented for the Jabuticabeira II archaeological site (shell mound), Santa Catarina, Brazil. By means of radarfacies identification, this study aims to delimit the archaeological site and differentiate the coastal depositional systems that compose its substrates. For these purposes, available models of the temporal–spatial distribution of depositional systems …
Shell mounds as environmental proxies on the southern coast of Brazil
Despite the multiple constraints of using shell mounds for building relative-sea-level (RSL) curves, one of the premises behind this use is still valid in modern archaeological research. This refers to the sites being continuously built near bodies of water rich in fish species and mollusk beds. Studies that combine the evolution of settlement patterns with the geological evolution of coastal areas in Brazil reach analogous results: the distribut…
Building Coastal Landscapes
Brazilian shell sites are largely considered to have been multifunctional and the location of both sacred and secular activities. This article explores the joint contribution that zooarchaeological and geoarchaeological analysis can bring to understanding the depositional history of shell sites and their functions. This combined approach is applied to the study of two shell mounds that represent important aspects of the diverse array of shell sit…
Archaeofacies analysis
In the coast of Santa Catarina State (southern Brazil), a large population of monumental shell mounds characterizes a highly dynamic coastal setting. In this paper, sedimentary facies analysis was adapted for description, sampling, and interpretation of shell mound complex and repetitive archaeostratigraphic successions. Archaeofacies identification in the field, according to depositional attributes, is tested by contrasting field description wit…
GPR and inductive electromagnetic surveys applied in three coastal sambaqui (shell mounds) archaeological sites in Santa Catarina state, South Brazil
