Somatoform Disorders: A Worldwide Perspective
The Genetic Structure of Cloninger's Seven‐Factor Model of Temperament and Character in a Japanese Sample
Theoretical assumptions regarding the genetic and environmental structure of personality proposed in Cloninger's seven‐factor model of temperament and character were verified in a Japanese sample by using the twin method. The Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI) was administered to 296 twin pairs ranging in age from 14 to 28 years old. Among four temperament dimensions (novelty seeking [NS], harm avoidance [HA], reward dependence [RD], and p…
Taijin Kyofusho in a Japanese Community Population
We report the first community epidemiological study of taijin kyofusho in Japan. A total of 132 inhabitants in a small community in the city of Kofu, Japan, was interviewed by trained interviewers using a semistructured interview, and completed self-report questionnaires. Of these respondents, nine (6.8%) reported ' taijin kyofu' symptoms, eight of whom reported having specific concerns about strong body odor although the ' taijin kyofu' symptoms…
Somatoform Symptoms in a Japanese Community Population: Prevalence and Association with Personality Characteristics
To investigate the prevalence rates and characteristics of poorly explained or unexplained somatic symptoms in the general population of Japan, questionnaires were administered to 132 people aged 18 years or older in a small community in the city of Kofu. The participants were then interviewed by trained interviewers using a semi-structured interview schedule. Of the 132 participants in our study, 55 (41%) reported somatic symptoms. Of these 55, …
Environmental and Possible Genetic Contributions to Character Dimensions of Personality
The relationship between dimensions of personality characteristics and the perceived rearing attitude of parents in the Japanese population were investigated. The scores on a measure of perceived parental attitude of 153 normal female students, measured on the Parker Parental Bonding Instrument, were correlated with personality features from the Japanese version of the Cloninger Temperament and Character Inventory. Self-directedness, especially t…
Multi-Cultural Study of Minor Psychiatric Disorders in Asia: Symptom Manifestations
Patients with minor psychiatric disorders, including neuroses, situational adjustment reaction or acute emotional reaction, were investigated using symptom questionnaires at five research sites in Asia including: Chiang-Mai, Thailand; Bali, Indonesia; Kao-Hsiung, Taiwan, China; Shanghai, China; and Tokyo, Japan. The results revealed that the symptom profiles differ significantly among groups of different settings indicating that sociocultural bac…
