  • Lake bed geomorphology and sedimentary processes in glacial lake Windermere, UK

Open Access•Helen Miller, Jonathan M Bull et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2013

A 1:10,000 map of the geomorphological features and sedimentary processes shaping the landscape is presented for Windermere, the largest lake in the English Lake District. High-resolution multibeam bathymetry and backscatter data, lake bed photography and sediment samples reveal a complex landform record, and have been used to identify nine sub-basins separated by steps, ridges and isolated topographic highs probably related to the retreat of the…

  • Mapping of the Buried Yarmouth Roads Wreck, Isle of Wight, UK, using a Chirp Sub-Bottom Profiler

    Open Access•Ruth Plets, Ruth M K Plets et al.•ARTICLE•The International Journal of…•2008•Cited by: 2•References: 1

Remains of the 16th-century Yarmouth Roads wreck, buried in sediments, were imaged using high-resolution geophysical techniques. The remains appear as strong reflectors underlain by an acoustic blanking zone, which was used to create maps of the wreck material. Close survey line-spacing allowed the construction of contour maps and hull sections, which revealed that the bow and stern sections are tilted to port at different angles, implying that t…

  • The Solutrean Atlantic Hypothesis

Open Access•Kieran Westley, Justin K Dix et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of the North Atlantic•2008•Cited by: 13•References: 59

One current hypothesis for the Pleistocene peopling of the Americas invokes a dispersal by European hunter-gatherers along a biologically productive “corridor” situated on the edge of the sea-ice that filled the Atlantic Ocean during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). In this paper, we assert that critical paleoceanographic data underpinning this hypothesis has not yet been examined in sufficient detail. To this end, we present data which show that …

  • Characterization of buried inundated peat on seismic (Chirp) data, inferred from core information

    Open Access•Ruth Plets, Justin K Dix et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological Prospection•2007•References: 6

Peat horizons provide a wide range of critical environmental and direct archaeological information for both archaeologists and Quaternary geologists. At present, such data are typically obtained from terrestrial exposures or cores, and occasional offshore cores. These data can provide invaluable and detailed site‐specific environmental information but require a relatively high spatial sampling strategy to provide more regional‐scale information. …

Open Access•R Quinn, Jonathan Adams et al.•ARTICLE•The International Journal of…•1998•Cited by: 2

Chirp sub-bottom profiler and repeat sidescan sonar imaging of the Invincible wreck site (1758) in the Solent (U.K.), interpretation, and implications for management of the site

  • Imaging wooden artefacts using Chirp sources

    Open Access•R Quinn, Jonathan M Bull et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological Prospection•1997

This paper investigates the potential for imaging submerged and buried wooden artefacts in the marine environment using high-resolution seismic reflection techniques. Models to calculate theoretical reflection coefficients of 11 wood species buried in shallow marine sediments are developed. The models use estimates of acoustic impedance contrasts to predict the strength of reflections resulting from buried wooden artefacts. Traditionally, wooden …
