Localised enamel hypoplasia of human primary canines (LHPC) in the Necropolis of Great Moravia in Znojmo-Hradiště (the so called Stronghold of Znojmo, 9th - 10th century CE, Czech Republic) and analys…
century CE in the South Moravian burial ground of Znojmo-Hradiště, to establish the association with incidence of dental caries, and to analyse the chemical element content of the enamel. The frequency and time of the development of enamel hypoplasia of the primary canine were established macroscopically. The chemical element content of the enamel was analysed via the EDX method. The incidence of LHPC is very high in this analysed collection in c…
Twenty-five thousand-year-old triple burial from Dolní Věstonice: An ice-age family
In 1986 a paleolithic triple burial was discovered near Dolní Vĕstonice (Czech Republic). The occurrence of anatomic variants in all three skeletons gave rise to speculations that the buried individuals may have been closely related. To test this hypothesis the skeletons were submitted to a systematic kinship analysis based on odontologic and other non-metric traits. Statistical tests showed that the coincident occurrence of several rare traits i…
Upper Palaeolithic fibre technology: Interlaced woven finds from Pavlov I, Czech Republic, c. 26,000 years ago
The later Palaeolithic sites of Moravia, the region of the Czech Republic west of Prague and north of Vienna, continue to provide remarkable new materials. To the art mobilier for which Dolní Věstonice and Pavlov have been celebrated, there has recently been added the technologies of groundstone and ceramics - and now woven materials, interlaced basketry or textiles, again of a kind one expects only from a quite later era
Religion und Kult in ur- und frühgeschichtlicher Zeit: 13. Tagung der Fachgruppe Ur- und Frühgeschichte vom 4. bis 6. November 1985 in Halle (Saale)
The Origins of Ceramic Technology at Dolni Věstonice, Czechoslovakia
A typology was established for more than 5000 ceramic artifacts at Dolni Vestonice, Czechoslovakia. Conjectured methods of manufacture were confirmed by radiography. The compositions and mineralogy of the artifacts were identical to those of the local soil, loess. A firing temperature range of 500° to 800°C was measured and compared with those of hearths and kilns. The mechanism of sintering was impurity-initiated, liquid-phase sintering. Many fr…

Palaeolithic Huts at Dolní Věstonice, Czechoslovakia
The question of ancient artificial dwellings or huts has been the subject of lively scientific discussion recently, though notices of their discovery at various palaeolithic sites in Europe have appeared in the literature from time to time throughout the past thirty years. Most of the archaeological evidence on the subject has been collected by Soviet workers whose discoveries of traces of ancient huts (in the course of extensive excavations at s…
