Adolescent Health: Are We Willing to Pay the Price for Inaction
Several years ago, a legislator spoke clearly of the wishful unawareness we often confront in public health. After a session of frank exchange in his committee about teen pregnancy in Arkansas, he said, “Dr. Elders, until you became the health department director, we didn't have this problem.” The facts paint a startling scenario for such people. We have not provided an environment in which our children can flourish. Instead, we have allowed the …
A survey of measured levels and dietary sources of selected organochlorine pesticide residues and metabolites in human sera from a rural population
We measured serum levels of 11 pesticide residues and metabolites in 85 rural-dwelling persons. In general, the serum levels increased with age, with males having slightly higher levels than females. Consumption of eggs from home-raised hens contributed substantially to increased serum concentrations of trans-nonachlor, heptachlor epoxide, and oxychlordane; consumption of home-grown root vegetables likewise contributed to increased serum concentr…
Effects of a low cholesterol eating plan on plasma lipids: Results of a three-year community study
In an attempt to demonstrate whether individuals with average plasma lipids would accept a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol, members of a community organization were taught the HELP Your Heart Eating Plan. Results of 282 individuals suggest that reduced dietary cholesterol from selected foods could be sustained for up to 36 months. While both plasma cholesterol and triglycerides fell during a year of instruction, both rose to above initi…
Anatomical distribution of subcutaneous fat and its description by multivariate methods: How valid are principal components
Principal components analyses of subcutaneous fat measurements covering arm, trunk, and leg areas of the body were performed on 44 samples varying in sex, age, and ethnicity of subjects; measurement technique; and number of sites studied. Three major components emerged, similar in all samples: A first component of obesity, a second component of anatomical fat distribution contrasting trunk and extremity fat, and a third distributional component c…
