  • Peter Brown , Journeys of the Mind. A Life in History

  • Jinty Nelson in Thirteen Articles

Open Access•Alice Rio, Stuart Airlie et al.•ARTICLE•Transactions of the Royal…•2025

This collection gathers thirteen contributions by a number of historians, friends, colleagues and/or students of Jinty’s, who were asked to pick their favourite article by her and say a few words about it for an event held in her memory on 15 January 2025 at King’s College London. We offer this collection in print now for a wider audience not so much because it has any claim to be exhaustive or authoritative, but because taken all together these …

  • Social and knowledge diversity in forest education

Open Access•Mika Rekola, Andrew Taber et al.•ARTICLE•AMBIO•2025•References: 24

A global assessment of the status of tertiary, vocational, and technical forest education and training found deficits in inclusion of knowledge and student diversity. Coverage of forest services and cultural and social issues was characterized as weak in the curricula of many programs. The inclusion of traditional and Indigenous knowledge was frequently poor or absent. Gaps were found in enrollment at tertiary education levels with respect to div…

  • Writing in gold

    David Ganz•ARTICLE•Word & Image•2023

Writing in gold has almost completely escaped the attention of art historical manuscript studies. Whereas the semantics and the materiality of gold used in works of goldsmithery as well as in illuminations and panel paintings have been frequently discussed, the fact that gold has been also applied to embellish texts, be they single initials and titles or entire chapters and volumes, has drawn relatively sparse comment. This article is part of a l…

A special gilding material called Zwischgold has been frequently observed in medieval gilded artefacts. As a bilayer metal leaf made from gold and silver, it exhibits similar but slightly paler golden colour tone compared to pure gold. Zwischgold surface can be darkened quickly due to the corrosion of its silver base. Despite its frequent mentions in medieval guild statutes, the production of Zwischgold and its important technological parameters …

  • Clothing Sacred Scriptures

David Ganz, Barbara Schellewald•EDITOR•BOOK•Clothing Sacred Scriptures•2018

According to a longstanding interpretation, book religions are agents of textuality and logocentrism. This volume inverts the traditional perspective: its focus is on the strong dependency between scripture and aesthetics, holy books and material artworks, sacred texts and ritual performances. The contributions, written by a group of international specialists in Western, Byzantine, Islamic and Jewish Art, are committed to a comparative and transc…

    Open Access•David Ganz•ARTICLE•The English Historical Review•2014

In the introduction to the first French volume of the Catalogue des manuscrits datés, published in 1959, Robert Marichal gave a superb account of the study of dated manuscripts and took on the challenge posed by Marc Bloch: ‘In 1200 there must have been plenty of scribes in their sixties who wrote as they had been taught around 1150’. The progress of the catalogues of dated and datable manuscripts has been steady, and they have proved an essentia…

Designed as a textbook, it contains a full and updated bibliography. Because the volume sets the development of Lat…

  • An Anglo-Saxon fragment of Alcuin's letters in the Newberry Library, Chicago

    Open Access•David Ganz•ARTICLE•Anglo-Saxon England•1993•References: 3

Among the fragments in the Newberry Library listed by Michael Masi in 1972, 1 his item no. 15 was described as ‘ninth century’ and ‘insular’. When I examined them, the two leaves of this fragment proved to contain portions of three letters of Alcuin, written to Charlemagne in the late 790s. 2 Copies of these letters are found in several ninth-century Carolingian manuscripts, but the only copy hitherto known to survive from Anglo-Saxon England is …
