  • The querns from the Roman military camp at Hermeskeil (Rhineland-Palatinate)

Open Access•Sabine Hornung, Tatjana Mirjam Gluhak et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Lithic Studies•2025

The late-Republican military camp at Hermeskeil (Rhineland-Palatinate) is one of the few known archaeological sites from the Gallic Wars and can be linked directly to the historical record given in Caesar’s De Bello Gallico. Among the numerous finds are fragments of several badly preserved querns whose provenances can provide valuable information regarding the dating of the camp. The Hermeskeil querns are made from an unusual variety of rock type…

  • Viscosity of soda-lime glass and potash-based glass of the Carolingian period (8th – 9th century CE)

    Open Access•Sharon L Webb, Antje Grebe et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2025•References: 1

  • Data on 61 Chemical Elements for the Characterization of Three Major Glass Compositions in Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages

Open Access•KARL HANS WEDEPOHL, KLAUS SIMON et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2011•Cited by: 22•References: 20

Sets of 20 soda ash, 16 soda lime and 23 wood ash glasses mainly from excavations in Europe were analysed by microprobe and LA–ICP-MS for 61 elements and are presented as average concentrations with standard deviations. Concentrations of sodium, potassium and magnesium allow the major glass type to be identified. Specific compositions of the raw materials of glass production indicate certain sources, technical processes and ages. Heavy minerals e…

  • Mineralogical and geochemical characterization of high-medieval lead-silver smelting slags from Wiesloch near Heidelberg (Germany)-an approach to process reconstruction

    Open Access•Florian Ströbele, Thomas J Wenzel et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological and Anthropological…•2010•Cited by: 13•References: 20

Here, we present detailed electron microprobe analyses and age data of high-medieval lead-silver smelting slags. The mineral composition data provide a database of all silicate and oxide phases in the slag. Bulk chemistry as well as mineral composition is used to reconstruct liquidus, solidus, and viscosity of the slag melt. By calculating the mass balance of the smelting process, a mass ratio of the various compounds used in the smelting process…

  • The chemical composition of a fragment from the Hedwig beaker excavated at the Royal Palace at Buda (Budapest)

    K H Wedepohl, K Wedepohl et al.•ARTICLE•Acta Archaeologica Academiae…•2009
