Companions in immigrant oncology visits: Uncovering social dynamics through the lens of Goffman's footing and Conversation Analysis
This paper examines the role of companions in healthcare encounters, focusing on a previously unexamined context: the oncology visit with immigrant patients. By employing a methodological approach that combines elements of Goffman's footing and Conversation Analysis, this study discerns the social dynamics and communicative patterns among doctors, patients, and companions. Our focus on the companion yields an intricate picture of their multifacet…
Living in Italian residential care under Covid-19 restrictions. A survey on adolescents’ perspectives over their psychosocial wellbeing
COVID-19 lockdown has been worldwide considered one of the major collective traumatic experiences for everyone, vulnerable adolescents included. Surprisingly, however, research on the experiences of adolescent living in residential care (RC) – considered it to be particularly exposed to traumas and developmental challenges – has been underdeveloped in the pandemic scenario. Bridging this gap and drawing on a national survey with Italian adolescen…
Two Sources of Miscommunication in Oncology Consultations: An Observational Study Using Conversation Analysis
This article investigates miscommunication in sequences of talk where an oncologist asks about patients’ co-morbidities, that is, their other illnesses beyond cancer. Using conversation analysis, we examine ways in which the participants identify and manage two sources of miscommunication: a divergence in the doctor’s and the patient’s understandings about the scope of the question; and a divergence in the doctor’s and the patient’s (and sometime…
Orchestrating children’s action: An in-depth multimodal analysis of child-educator interactions in one Italian early childhood education setting
Early childhood educational centers (ECEC) are contexts where young children make their first contact with specific, culturally determined rules, practices, and values. Only a few studies have analyzed in-depth the practices through which the educators direct the children’s action and attention while they are performing routine educational activities. By means of detailed transcription of educators-children conversations and Conversation Analytic…
We will take care of you: Identity categorisation markers in intercultural medical encounters
Ethnomethodology research has systematically investigated discursive practices of categorisation, looking at the various ways by which social actors ascribe both themselves and others to identity categories to accomplish various kinds of social actions. Drawing on a data corpus of oncological visits collected in an Italian hospital, involving both native and non-native patients, the present work analyses how participants in these intercultural me…

Religiosity as a Cultural Resource for Arab-Palestinian Women's Coping with Cancer
Drawing on the discourse analysis of 36 in-depth interviews, this qualitative study explores how Arab-Palestinian women cope with breast cancer and ascribe meaning to their illness within the local religious and traditional cultural context. In particular, the study shows that religious beliefs and practices help Arab-Palestinian women to handle emotional and psychological difficulties while perpetuating traditional cultural norms of concealment.…

Social Interactions and Cultural Repertoires as Resources for Coping With Breast Cancer
The article aims to better understand the role of cultural and social resources for coping with cancer as a disruptive experience. Fourteen women who had recently received a diagnosis of breast cancer and started a treatment in an Italian hospital have been interviewed individually to elicit narratives regarding the interactions with the other patients. The analysis focused on the role played by social interactions and cultural repertoires as dev…
Managing risk and patient involvement in choosing treatment for cancer: An Analysis of Two Communication Practices
Drawing on conversation analyses of oncology consultations collected in Italy, the article examines the communication practices used to recommend treatments. We found that the oncologist formulates the treatment recommendation (TR) for high-risk patients in terms of a 'mandatory' choice and for low-risk patients as an 'optional' type of decision. In the first case the doctor presses to reach a decision during the visit while in the second case le…
Diagnostic Decision Making in Oncology: Creating Shared Knowledge and Managing Complexity
Drawing upon the concept of practice, the article explores diagnostic decision making in oncology through the analysis of informal conversations between doctors in an Italian hospital. The analysis shows that doctors rely on three collaborative practices: (a) joint interpretation, (b) intersubjective generation and validation of hypotheses, and (c) postponing the diagnostic decision. Through such practices, doctors jointly handle tough issues suc…
“It Seems That Things Take Care of Themselves”: Routines in Busy Family Lives
In this study we analyze how 15 working mothers talk about the ways in which routines contribute to sustaining the accomplishment of their domestic work. In particular, we analyze the routines’ function of coordinating multiple lines of activity, their property of anticipating the unexpected and incorporating alternative responses, and their character of being a local resource for practical thinking and action. We then discuss the role that moral…
Preserving the Respondent’s Standpoint in a Research Interview: Different Strategies of ‘Doing’ the Interviewer
Planning and assessing performance through narratives in soccer team meetings
Soccer teams, as many other sport teams, need, among other activities, to plan their behaviours for future matches and to reflect upon their past performances on the pitch. Within a discursive perspective, we aim to analyse how narratives contribute to shape these team activities during technical meetings. The analyses are based on naturally occurring interactions of an Italian soccer team, recorded during three technical meetings (after a victor…

Embodiment at the Interface: Materialization Practices in Web Design
In this article, we describe some of the results of a research project that studied Web design practices in an Internet company. In this work setting, technology acts as both the instrument of mediation, which supports the shared realization of work practices, and as the product of that work activity. For this reason, of particular importance are the social practices by which the designers (a) incrementally and jointly imagine the portal that the…
