  • Fluid-Bonding and Feelings Condoms

    Open Access•Chris Barcelos•ARTICLE•Catalyst Feminism Theory…•2023

There is an abundance of scholarship on knowledge, behaviors, and attitudes related to safer sex technologies and practices, including a growing body of work that analyses the politics of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). However, there is comparatively little research that applies a queer feminist science and technology studies lens to safer sex technologies and practices other than condoms and PrEP. This paper draws on archival research and thir…

  • Queer punishments

Gabrielle Orum Hernández, Chris Barcelos•ARTICLE•Equity & Excellence in Education•2023

Although educational research and policymaking in the United States has generally framed LGBTQ youth and youth of color as mutually exclusive groups, LGBTQ youth of color are increasingly included in discourses surrounding school safety. These discourses tend to position youth as vulnerable, at-risk subjects who are passive victims of interpersonal homophobia. Using the theoretical frameworks queer of color critique and queer necropolitics, and a…

  • Adventures in fisting

    Chris Barcelos, Chris A Barcelos•ARTICLE•Sex Education•2023

Fisting is a sexual practice that is almost always left out of sex and sexuality education. It elicits strong reactions, both from practitioners who describe it as a highly pleasurable, safe, and even spiritual activity, and from critics and clinicians who condemn it as dangerous. Fisting has attracted little scholarly attention but has ignited conservative outrage and censorship. Education about fisting is largely confined to nonformal delivery …

  • Stephen Epstein, The Quest for Sexual Health

    Open Access•Chris Barcelos•ARTICLE•Social History of Medicine•2023

I often give my undergraduate students a mini assignment to ask a friend, family member or random person on the bus to define 'sexual health'.The responses they report back generally fall into three categories: 'That's a personal question' 'I don't know' and 'STDs and stuff like that'.This assignment enables students to observe the slippery meaning of something that they take for granted.Their respondents demonstrate that the meaning of 'sexual h…

  • The Affective Politics of Care in Trans Crowdfunding

    Chris Barcelos•ARTICLE•TSQ Transgender Studies Quarterly•2022•Cited by: 3•References: 10

Trans-for-trans crowdfunding is a common strategy to raise money both for gender-affirming medical care and for survival expenses related to living in a transphobic world. Although crowdfunding is infrequently successful in funding our survival needs, there have been few attempts to theorize what this form of mutual aid accomplishes. The objective of this article is to explore the possibilities and limits of trans crowdfunding as part of a critic…

  • The trans youth justice project

Chris Barcelos, j nyla mcneil et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of LGBT Youth•2022•References: 6

Research has demonstrated that systemic transphobia and cissexism harms transgender youth in terms of social, educational, and health outcomes. All too often, research and policy emphasizes vulnerability among trans youth in a way that denies their capabilities as agents of change or active participants in their liberation. This article analyzes the development of Trans Youth Justice Project, a political education and youth leadership development…

  • Go fund inequality

    Open Access•Chris Barcelos•ARTICLE•Critical Public Health•2019

Despite improvements in access to transition-related medical care, many transgender people still face numerous barriers to paying for gender-affirming procedures. Crowdfunding websites have gained immense popularity as a strategy for trans people to raise money for transition-related healthcare expenses. Using descriptive statistics and thematic content analysis, this paper illustrates how fundraising campaigns for medical gender transition both …

  • Bye-bye boobies’

    Chris Barcelos•ARTICLE•Culture Health & Sexuality•2019

Transgender individuals experience multiple barriers to accessing care related to medical transition, including a shortage of providers as well as health insurance programmes that categorically exclude the provision of gender-affirming hormones and surgery. Like people seeking financial support for health care related to illness or injury, many transgender people utilise web-based crowdfunding to help pay for medical transition costs. Although a …

  • Culture, Contraception, and Colorblindess

    Open Access•Chris Barcelos•ARTICLE•Gender & Society•2018•Cited by: 4•References: 25

Feminist scholars have identified how race and gender discourses influence the creation and implementation of school-based sexual health education and the provision of health care, yet there are few studies that examine how race and gender work in sexual health promotion as it occurs through community-based public health efforts. Drawing on three years of ethnographic research in a low-income Puerto Rican community, this article demonstrates how …

  • Bodies That Tell

    Chris Barcelos, A Gubrium•ARTICLE•Signs: Journal of Women in…•2018•Cited by: 4•References: 21

Most visual culture related to early childbearing represents pregnant and parenting teen bodies as sites of fear and disgust. The embodied experiences of pregnant and parenting young women are almost completely ignored, which serves to marginalize voices, knowledges, and bodies. In this project, we use a participatory visual research approach, digital storytelling, as a strategy to surface embodied knowledges related to young pregnancy and parent…

  • Reproducing Stories

    Chris Barcelos, Chris A Barcelos et al.•ARTICLE•Social Problems•2014•Cited by: 14•References: 22

Pregnant and parenting young women are simultaneously silenced and overrepresented by raced and classed social narratives on adolescent childbearing in the United States. These narratives posit teen childbearing as an unequivocal social, health, and economic problem, although some scholars and policy makers construct alternative narratives that focus on inequalities and propose different perspectives on causes and consequences. Narrative inquiry …

  • Producing (potentially) pregnant teen bodies

    Open Access•Chris Barcelos, Chris A Barcelos•ARTICLE•Critical Public Health•2013

Although the rate of adolescent childbearing in the USA continues to decline, and its consequences increasingly found to be equivocal, a persistent discourse of teen pregnancy as pathology structures public health responses. Foucault’s concepts of biopower and governmentality are useful to understand and critically analyze the operation of power in discourses related to adolescent childbearing; specifically, how power over life is simultaneously …
