From classroom to community
Social enterprises (SEs) combine social and economic goals, requiring a distinct social transformational leadership (STL) style characterized by moral clarity, inspiration, motivation, innovation, and personal growth. This leadership promotes social value and financial stability. Studies reveal SE leaders face a leadership skills gap due to limited training in public administration (MPA) and nonprofit management (MNM) programs. An online faculty …

Digital public goods platforms for development
In this article we consider the notion of digital global public good and articulate our understanding of it. Against this conceptual foil, we examine the development of DHIS2, a global health platform inspired by public goods, focusing on the paradoxes that arise in the scaling process. We find that the scaling dynamics played out differently at the macro and micro levels, giving rise to the following paradoxes: addition of new functionalities to…
Digital labour platforms in Pakistan
Purpose While digital labour platforms are being increasingly studied across the Global South, the existing literature does not conceptualise the theoretical link between such platforms and socio-economic development. This paper theorises such a link drawing on the notion of institutional voids defined, as in Khanna and Palepu (2010), as “the absence of intermediaries to efficiently connect buyers and sellers” in an economy. We frame digital labo…
Digital platforms and institutional voids in developing countries
Institutional voids – shortcomings in the institutional functions required by markets – have particularly hampered developing countries. Filling those voids has been widely identified as a strategy for businesses and in this paper we analyse the institutional actions of digital platform companies. Specifically and through primary research, we analyse the impact of e-hailing platforms (Uber, Bolt and EasyTaxi) in Colombia and South Africa on ride-…

Human resource development policy in the context of software exports
Software industry development is acknowledged as an important engine of economic growth for many less developed countries. The role of national policy has been identified by various researchers as a catalyst to software industry and software exports development. Software development is a service that is both labour and knowledge-intensive, and thus an important aspect of related policy is concerned with the provision of appropriately educated and…
The Effects of the September 11 Terrorist Attacks on Russian Immigrants
The terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 changed the course of American history. Because of the scope and proportion of the disaster, its impact on witnesses was unprecedented both with regard to the numbers of people who were psychologically affected and the intensity of individual reactions. To better understand how different groups of people witnessing the events through the mass media were impacted, we conducted a qualitative study of a sa…
Miscarriage of Meaning (Poem)
1901 and the great Australian silence fell with deafening reality over the brown earth. A silence, screaming out its permanency in mortar and sand, recording in Joycean confusion, tho' lacking his learning and wit, that ineluctable modality he would ascribe to Bloom some years on. What measure of law could flaunt its own origins so glibly

The influence of pre-emigration and postemigration stressors on mental health
Using path analysis, the study discussed in this article examined the direct and indirect effects of a series of pre-emigration and postemigration factors on mental health status among 447 Southeast Asian refugees. Bicultural interviewers administered a cross-sectional survey to a stratified sample of community residents divided evenly by ethnicity (Cambodian, Vietnamese, Laotian, and Hmong), gender, and employment status (working or nonworking).…
The Influence of Culture on Teaching Southeast Asian Paraprofessionals
This paper addresses the need for training Southeast Asian paraprofessional social workers. The theoretical and empirical literature on the social service needs of this group report that under-utilization and premature termination of services is common for this population. Further, all evidence points to the fact that Southeast Asians respond more readily to indigenous workers, who are knowledgeable about the cultural differences in service deliv…
