Growing Up in the Face of Change: Environmental Transformation and Child Socialisation in Indigenous South America
The relationship of humans with the nonhuman world has become a central topic in anthropology in recent years. This has also led to a renewed interest in Indigenous communities, as those most vulnerable to environmental change, while also offering alternative modes of relating to the environment. But very little attention has been paid to children in such debates. Children will suffer the long-term consequences of changes. In turn, modes of relat…
We all live well together now: Ethics, ontology, and the face of the other
Ethics and ontology have become prominent concepts in recent anthropology, informing a variety of research endeavours. Despite their different approaches, agendas, and concerns, they share a central focus on alterity and the relationship between self and other: Who is the other? How should I relate to the other? In relating these concerns, ontological questions would appear to have logical primacy over ethical ones: after all, one must understand…

The past few years, however, have seen attempts at articulating the two, interrogatingwhat language isfrom ethnographic perspectives and extending the analytic focus toontologies of languageorlinguistic natures. This article discusses such efforts and compare…
Grammaticalization, Language Contact, and the Emergence of a Hortative in Guaraché, a New Mixed Language in Paraguay
This paper discusses the emergence of a hortative marker in Guaraché, a new mixed language in Paraguay, the result of language mixing of the Indigenous Aché language and Paraguayan Guaraní. After settlement on reservations, the formerly nomadic Aché hunter-gatherers began shifting to the national language Guaraní, resulting in Guaraché, which is currently learned by children as their first language. Guaraché speakers have incorporated parts of th…
Language Evolution
Language evolution refers to the origins and development of the human system of communication. Research on language evolution compares aspects of human communication with those of other animals, especially nonhuman primates, and analyzes gestures, multimodal communication, pidgins and creoles, child development, the physiology of the vocal tract, genes and neurons, the brain and brain damage, as well as the fossil record. Theories of language evo…
