This study evaluates whether post-depositional phytolith migration occurred from soils into ceramic sherds recovered at the Miraflores archaeological site in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, Colombia. It compares the phytolith assemblages found in soil contexts with those present in the associated ceramic materials. A total of 40 samples (11 soil and 29 ceramic) were analysed using translocation indices (T, CT, and CT′), Jaccard similarity coeff…

Blue Pill, Red Pill: The Incommensurable Worlds of Racism and Antiblackness
Examining two foundational texts of Black liberation, Kwame Ture and Charles Hamilton’s Black Power (1967) and the Black feminist socialist manifesto “The Combahee River Collective Statement” (1977), through an allegory borrowed from the 1999 film The Matrix, this article argues that both engage two distinct worlds: the “red pill” world of antiblackness, defined by Black people’s specific, exceptional, and incommensurable ontological and social c…
The spectre of Haiti: Structural antiblackness, the far-right backlash and the fear of a black majority in Brazil
This article situates the far-right backlash in Brazil within the larger Latin American context, including its colonial legacy, leftist governments’ failure to deliver promises of inclusion, and the US–China geopolitical dispute over the region’s strategic natural resources. By situating Bolsonaro’s electoral victory within these dynamics, our analysis presents an alternative to two common perspectives. First, studies of the region’s political mo…

On deaf ears: Anti-black police terror, multiracial protest and white loyalty to the state
In this essay, we explore the racialised dimensions of policing practices in Brazil. To do so, we look not at the police, their administrative organisation, and practices, but rather we examine the modes of sociality reflected in and produced by police violence. Drawing from a statistics-based analysis of the social and political outcomes produced by the state in its preparation of mega-sports events – evictions, incarceration, and police violenc…
This paper discusses the role played by warfare in the emergence of social hierarchization in the Savannas of the Orinoco in Colombia and Venezuela. Here the main elements of the ethnohistorical and archaeological models proposed for the region are summarized. In addition a methodological strategy to the archaeological analysis of warfare in the Llanos is presented. In conclusion it is argued that although warfare was present in the Llanos of Ven…
HPV knowledge and impact of genital warts on self esteem and sexual life in Colombian patients
Information on HPV knowledge in patients with genital warts is scarse as is the information on factors related to the impact on self-esteem and sex life among them. We conducted a cross-sectional study in adult patients with a clinical diagnosis of genital warts (GW) attending a major private out-patient clinic in Bogotá, Colombia. Patients underwent biopsy for pathological diagnosis, HPV-DNA testing and completed a questionnaire assessing HPV kn…
Geographies of death: An intersectional analysis of police lethality and the racialized regimes of citizenship in São Paulo
This paper presents an intersectional analysis of police lethality in the city of São Paulo. We deploy the concept of geography of death to investigate the multi-layered aspects of state-sanctioned lethal violence perpetrated by, but not limited to, the police force. This entails a consideration of at least three types of factor: actual violent acts, their symbolic dimensions and the historical and structural conditions within which violence emer…
