  • Constructing the Ideal Victim: Glorification of Crown Prince Sado in South Korean Popular Culture

    Open Access•Brenda Wall, Barbara Wall•ARTICLE•Acta Koreana•2024

The tragic death of Crown Prince Sado in a rice chest in 1762 has been the subject of much discussion, not only in the academic world but also in South Korean popular culture. In contrast to historical data that suggest that Sado was mentally ill and a violent person whose death was necessary to safeguard the position of the Yi royal house, popular culture has presented him in a more sympathetic light as a victim, blaming political power struggle…

  • Questioning ethical possibility: Thigh slicing as ritual for the initiation of compassion and filial piety in Kim Ki-duk’s Pietà (2012)

Brenda Wall, Claus Nygaard Petersen•ARTICLE•Journal of Japanese and Korean…•2019

Filial piety forms the core of human relations in Confucian morality. One form of filial piety is ‘filial cannibalism’, a term for incidents in which children offer their own flesh to their parents out of filial piety (Wang, Sixiang. 2012. “The Filial Daughter of Kwaksan: Finger Servering, Confucian Virtues, and Envoy Poetry in Early Chosǒn.” Seoul Journal of Korean Studies 25 (2): 175–212). One method of filial cannibalism during the Joseon dyna…

  • Deconstruction of Ideological Discourses: Ch’oe Inhun’s Sŏyugi (The Journey to the West, 西遊記) as a Parody of Xiyouji (The Journey to the West, 西遊記)

Open Access•Brenda Wall, Barbara Wall Barbara Wall•ARTICLE•Acta Koreana•2017

In the academic realm, the title The Journey to the West is generally identified with the Shidetang edition of the 100-chapter novel allegedly written by Wu Cheng’en in the Ming Dynasty at the end of the 16th century. In Korea, though, the title is generally associated not with the 100-chapter novel but with various shorter retellings, which tend to highlight the fantastic and adventurous facets of the story. For this reason, many scholars have a…

  • Self-mockery of hallyu in the Korean drama My Love from the Star ( Byeol eso on geudae ) and the role of the seventeenth-century novel The Dream of the Nine Clouds ( Guunmong )

Brenda Wall•ARTICLE•Journal of Japanese and Korean…•2016

The fields of Korean classical literature and Korean TV drama do not often intermingle. Viewers of K-dramas can sometimes watch their protagonists thumb through certain books onstage, but these books are usually of foreign origin and do not belong to the so-called canon of traditional Korean literature. As a covert parody of the The Dream of the Nine Clouds, My Love from the Star is an exception. It does not only explicitly allude to the novel, b…

  • The Experience of God

Kevin Hart, Brenda Wall et al.•BOOK•The Experience of God•2005

This book provides a series of approaches to the ancient question of whether and how God is a matter of “experience”, or, alternately, to what extent the notion of experience can be true to itself if it does not include God. On the one hand, it seems impossible to experience God: the deity does not offer Himself to sense experience. On the other hand, there have been mystics who have claimed to have encountered God. The essays in this collection …
