A Critical Appraisal of Amish Studies' De Facto Paradigm, 'Negotiating with Modernity
The predominant paradigm for Amish research over the past three decades has been 'negotiating with modernity' (NWM). NWM explains how the Amish as a distinctive American culture and religion have overcome the threats modernity poses to their existence. This article argues that NWM has been accepted and replicated uncritically and without empirical testing due to properties making it inherently untestable. We first synthesize the central NWM liter…

The Hutterites in North America
The historian Rod Janzen and the anthropologist Max Stanton have been researching and writing about Hutterites for a quarter century. They have left no stone unturned and no Hutterite colony unvisited. The depth of their research and the breadth of their experience are clear in this book, which will long serve as the definitive and essential work on the Hutterites. Janzen and Stanton describe Hutterite beginnings as a communitarian version of Ana…

The Amish on the Iowa Prairie, 1840 to 1910
This volume tells the story of how the Amish integrated themselves into a mid-American society, even as they preserved their own culture. Steven D. Reschly traces the Amish in Iowa from their initial settlement in the 1840s, through the community's experiences at the close of the 19th century, when the rural economy of the USA had matured, and into the early part of the 20th century. As Reschly demonstrates, the Amish experience of marginality an…

The Amish on the Iowa Prairie, 1840 to 1910
Steven D. Reschly's book borrows concepts and methods from sociology and economics and applies them to Amish history. Its method is very different from that of, say, Steven M. Nolt's definitive A History of the Amish (1992), Paton Yoder's work on the emergence of the Old Order pattern, or my Old Order chapter in Peace, Faith, Nation (1988). Instead of dwelling on sources, issues, and developments generated by the Amish themselves, Reschly drew qu…

The Foreign Worker and the German Labor Movement
The rural origins of the Polish migrants and their traditional Catholic religious beliefs led most observers, including their fellow workers as well as recent historians, to view them as obstacles to the labor movement and resistant to working-class consciousness. Based on extensive research in archives in Poland and Germany, this book documents a very different history. Throughout his rigorous examination of the major strikes and developments wi…
