  • ‘Layered Resilience’ in Urban Context: An Investigation into the Interplay Between the Local State and Ethnic Minority Groups in Two European Cities During the Covid-19 Pandemic

    Open Access•Jorg Durrschmidt, John Eade•ARTICLE•Social Sciences•2026

This article explores urban ‘societal resilience’ during the global pandemic of 2020–2021. This health crisis involved a complex interweaving of social, cultural, political, and economic processes which involved both top-down measures undertaken by nation-state governments and bottom-up actions by local residents. In a research study undertaken in two European cities—Stuttgart and London—we focussed on two migrant minorities and the involvement b…

  • The irresolvable unease about be-longing: Exploring globalized dynamics of homecoming

    Open Access•Jorg Durrschmidt•ARTICLE•European Journal of Cultural…•2016•Cited by: 2•References: 12

Homecomings tend to be unsettling. Any effort of embarking on the balancing act of bringing cosmopolitan experience and local life together is mediated by absence and sequences of life lived elsewhere. Return, consequently, is by no means a concluding movement in geographic space but an enduring process of regaining the precarious good of social ‘recurrence’. Thus, despite global flow of information, ‘homecomers’ often find themselves as involunt…

  • Everyday Lives in the Global City: The Delinking of Locale and Milieu

Jorg Durrschmidt•BOOK•Everyday Lives in the Global City•2013

Rejecting simplifying notions of globalisation as a macro-economic force, this book provides a grounded picture of the various ways in which people's biographies are tied up with the global cultural economy. The main argument of the book is that the globalisation of lives is experienced by people as the 'extension' of their 'milieux' both spatially and symbolically.

  • What's wrong with globalization: Contra 'flow speak' - towards an existential turn in the theory of globalization

    Open Access•Heinz Bude, Jorg Durrschmidt•ARTICLE•European Journal of Social Theory•2010•Cited by: 31•References: 19

The article attempts a reformulation of globalization theory. We identify 'flow speak' and the flattened ontology of the social that goes with it as a major limitation in contemporary globalization theory. Contrary to the prevailing overemphasis on mobility and deterritorialization, we suggest an existential turn that orients future globalization thinking more towards issues of belonging, choice and commitment, and the rhythmicity of social relat…

  • Globalisation, Modernity and Social Change: Hotspots of Transition

Jorg Durrschmidt, Graham Taylor et al.•BOOK•Globalisation, Modernity and…•2007

This text provides an overview of the sociology of change and transition, exploring how global transformation processes impact on everyday life by examining a number of ‘hot spots’ of change in contemporary society: the city, the workplace, patterns of consumption, politics, broader areas and the environment. It engages with a range of theories and concepts, in order to investigate the interplay of continuity and change in contemporary society, a…

  • So near yet so far: Blocked networks, global links and multiple exclusion in the German-Polish borderlands

    Open Access•Jorg Durrschmidt•ARTICLE•Global Networks•2006•Cited by: 8•References: 32

The building blocks of global society are conventionally thought of in terms of ‘flows’, ‘scapes’, ‘key nodes’, and ‘global cities’, to name a few. We rarely consider borders and border regions. However, state borders provide a crucial component of a globalizing society in transition. Exhibiting a structural ambivalence, borders can be seedbeds of cosmopolitanism, sites of cultural closure, or often both simultaneously. To understand cross-border…

  • Multiple Agoras: Local and Regional Environmental Policies between Globalization and European Pathways of Transformation

    Jorg Durrschmidt•ARTICLE•Innovation The European Journal…•2002•Cited by: 1•References: 8

Bell's well-known assumption that the nation-state is becoming too small for the big problems of life and too big for the small problems of life, has become commonplace in the contemporary debate on the nation-state in a global age. Against the background of the upcoming EU East-enlargement, the article investigates some of the environmental policy implications behind this catchphrase. Drawing on Beck's thesis of an 'unbinding of politics' it is …

  • "They're Worse Off Than Us"- The Social Construction of European Space and Boundaries in the German/Polish Twin-City Guben-Gubin

    Jorg Durrschmidt•ARTICLE•Identities•2002•Cited by: 4•References: 13

In the context of globalization and European integration, the interplay between social boundaries and territorially defined political borders becomes more complex in that they become increasingly delinked. In some regional settings, this might imply that while the political border is softened, the socio-cultural closure between the border communities becomes even tighter. This article investigates this issue in relation to the German-Polish borde…

  • Local Exchange and Trading Schemes: A Useful Strand of Community Economic Development Policy

    Open Access•R K O''Doherty, Richard O’doherty et al.•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning A…•1999•Cited by: 8•References: 18

We identify local exchange and trading schemes (LETS) as a social movement rooted in the alternative milieux of greens, feminists, new agers, and so on, comprising those committed to experimenting with new ideas and identities. LETS have the potential to strengthen these milieux and thereby reinforce civil society within a locality, enhancing the benefits from a web of personal networks and extending them through weak links. LETS might also act a…

  • DIY Culture and Extended Milieux: Lets, Veggie Boxes and Festivals

    Open Access•Derrick Purdue, Jorg Durrschmidt et al.•ARTICLE•The Sociological Review•1997•Cited by: 33•References: 22

The wave of DIY culture and environmental innovation sweeping through the UK is not restricted to isolated sites of high profile protest, such as the Newbury bypass. Based on fieldwork in the South West of England, consisting of in-depth interviews, participant observation, focus groups and a postal survey, we argue that networks such as those around festivals, LETS and organic food box schemes contribute to green milieux, which encourage ecologi…

  • The impact of globalization on sociological concepts: Community, culture and milieu

Martin Albrow, John Eade et al.•ARTICLE•Innovation The European Journal…•1994•Cited by: 10•References: 33

Out of Giddens' (1990) emphasis on modernity and Robertson's (1992) on globality emerges the need to conceptualize globalization in relation to the social per se. An exemplificatory conceptual case study points to global processes straining older concepts formed for nation state sociologies:deterrtorialization of the community concept results in the imagined community; global culture signals the fragmentation of the culture concept; 'milieu ' has…
