Lexical-Syntactic Classes of Adjectives in Copular Sentences across Spanish Varieties: The Innovative Use of Estar
This paper aims to provide a clearer understanding of the structure known in the literature as the innovative use of estar, illustrated in sentences like Luego salgo/voy a visitar usuarios que están muy morosos [Medellín, Colombia; Preseea] ("Today I am going to visit users that are.ESTAR defaulting debtors"). In such sentences, no comparison is established between stages or counterparts of the subject of predication with regard to the property e…
Alba Cerrudo, Ángel J. Gallego and Francesc Roca Urgell: Syntactic geolectal variation: Traditional approaches, current challenges and new tools
Article Alba Cerrudo, Ángel J. Gallego and Francesc Roca Urgell: Syntactic geolectal variation: Traditional approaches, current challenges and new tools was published on November 2, 2023 in the journal Folia Linguistica (volume 57, issue 3)
Perspectivized estar -sentences with aesthetic adjectives across American Spanish varieties
The article describes the behavior of aesthetic adjectives ( bonito ‘beautiful’) in the so-called innovative constructions with estar ‘be estar ’, documented in some American varieties of Spanish. These innovative structures ( El poema está bonito ‘The poem is beautiful’) do not compare stages of the subject with respect to an aesthetic property (as would be their meaning in general Spanish), but rather express a perspectivized assertion, linked …
On degree minimizers in Spanish
The goal of this paper is to provide both a description and an explanation of the combination of minimizers (ligeramente 'slightly') with gradable adjectives in Spanish. According to Kennedy & McNally (2005) these elements are degree items that are sensitive to the scalar structure of adjectives and are combined with closed scale, minimum standard adjectives. Unexpected combinations, according to this semantics, are considered as cases of coercio…
Boundaries, Phases and Interfaces: Case Studies in Honor of Violeta Demonte
This book approaches the concept of 'boundary', central in linguistic theory, and the related notion of 'phase' from the perspective of the interaction between syntax and its interfaces. A primary notion is that phases are the appropriate domains to explain most interface linguistic phenomena and that the study of (narrow) interfaces helps to understand conditions on the internal structure of the Language Faculty. The first part of this volume is…
Comparison classes and the relative/absolute distinction: A degree-based compositional account of the ser/estar alternation in Spanish
On the syntax of exceptions. Evidence from Spanish
Gender agreement on adverbs in Spanish
In this article we explore the exceptional gender agreement of the Spanish adverb mucho ('much'), when it modifies comparative adjectives inside DPs that contain a particular type of noun (as in muchafem mejor intenciónfem, 'much better intention'). This phenomenon, which we describe in detail, raises crucial questions both about the mechanisms of agreement and about the nature of gender in a language such as Spanish. We will argue on the basis o…
Information structure and the referential status of bare plurals
The goal of this paper is to study the influence of information structure in the referential status of linguistic expressions such as bare plurals and indefinite NPs in Spanish. In particular, we will argue for the following claims: (a) Spanish bare plurals can receive a generic interpretation in object position and (b) Spanish bare plurals in object position can be topics in siru. We will focus on object position because of the well known semant…
