  • Making Climate-Smart Cocoa Inclusive

Open Access•Dzifa Torvikey, Gertrude Dzifa Torvikey et al.•ARTICLE•Society in Transition•2024

Climate-Smart Cocoa (CSC), a strategic offshoot of the wider Climate-Smart Agriculture, is gaining ground in Ghana, a cocoa export-dependent country. CSC is imperative, given the rapidly declining forests, prolonged periods of drought, pest and disease infestations, and fluctuating cocoa yields attributed to climate variability and change. Although many interventions are instituted to restore sustainable cocoa production, they are largely technic…

Open Access•Charles Ackah, Dzifa Torvikey et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Social…•2024

Design/methodology/approach The authors address this gap using qualitative data from 30 female entrepreneurs in three neighbourhoods with varying socio-economic characteristics in Ghana's capital, Accra. Findings The authors find a marked aversion to bank …

  • Transforming critical agrarian studies

Diana Aguiar, Yahye Ahmed et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Peasant Studies•2023•Cited by: 12•References: 96

This paper examines the challenges and opportunities faced by critical agrarian scholars in and from the Global South. We argue that despite the historical and structural limitations, the critical juncture of convergence of crises and renewed interest in agrarian political economies offers an opportunity for fostering a diverse research agenda that opens space for critical perspectives about, from and by the Global South, which is mostly absent i…

  • Land and Contestations over Autochthony and Local Citizenship in Agrarian Ghana

    Open Access•Dzifa Torvikey•ARTICLE•Agrarian South Journal of…•2022•References: 19

This article examines the reimagination of communities in an industrial cassava frontier of Ghana in the wake of a contested land grab supported by state and community institutions. Qualitative and survey data were used to construct the existing social relations in the communities through the lens of earlier processes of agrarian change that have transformed the social base of the communities. It is argued that the expansion of capitalist product…

  • Land, Gender, and Class Relations in Ghana's Cassava Frontier

    Open Access•Dzifa Torvikey, Gertrude Dzifa Torvikey•ARTICLE•Agrarian South Journal of…•2021•Cited by: 4•References: 9

Lands for domestic production in rural areas have increasingly shrunk and the rules of access have changed as corporate land grabs intensify in many parts of the Global South. These occurrences are outcomes of processes that are packaged in state policies that promote market intervention in agricultural production. In Ghana, state initiatives promote large-scale industrial cassava production in rural areas. This article discusses land grabs in ca…

It uses the case of Blue Skies Holdings Ltd, an agro-processing company in Ghana. The article shows the contribution of Blue Skies to youth employment in Ghana. However, changes in the global production of the company’s primary export commodity and local shocks created new challenges for the company. The article explains how local ec…

This paper provides a broad review of agrarian change in Ghana by highlighting the major developments in the agrarian political economy and their implications for agricultural commercialisation and its modifying influence on land tenure systems, livelihoods, production systems, social relations, and labour relations. While current land tenure arrangements and labour relations in Africa are often explained in terms of globalisation, we argue that …

  • Agricultural commercialisation models, agrarian dynamics and local development in Ghana

Joseph Awetori Yaro, Joseph Kofi Teye et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Peasant Studies•2017•Cited by: 28•References: 17

The renewed commitment of African states to modernising agriculture has reignited longstanding debates about different models of agricultural commercialisation. Which forms of commercialisation models will reduce land dispossession and the impoverishment of smallholders, and transform smallholder agriculture and the wider economy? Of the three broad models of agriculture commercialisation in this debate - plantation, contract farming and medium-s…

  • Farm to Factory Gendered Employment

Open Access•Dzifa Torvikey, Gertrude Dzifa Torvikey et al.•ARTICLE•Agrarian South Journal of…•2016•Cited by: 3•References: 19

Since the 1980s, a neoliberal paradigm has guided agricultural policy formulation in Africa with an unflinching preference for the commercialization of agriculture through the incorporation of smallholder farmers into global circuits of accumulation via outgrower arrangements. The paradigm has claimed that the promotion of integrated value chains will create jobs and enhance incomes in agrarian areas. This article assesses the manner in which men…
