Transcending the Trade-off Between External and Internal Validity
This article contributes to the mixed methods literature by proposing a critical realist philosophy of science to resolve the apparent, and ultimately unfruitful, trade-off between internal and external validity. It is argued that this trade-off is a false dichotomy rooted in contestable philosophical assumptions about causality. Thanks to its stratified ontology and epistemological focus on causal mechanisms, critical realism allows for reconcep…
Turkey’s Arendtian Moment
Urban spaces have always been sites of conflict. This article examines the Gezi Park occupation of June 2013 in Istanbul. Drawing on Hannah Arendt’s political theory and constructing Arendt’s public space as an actual, physical location that allows members of a community to come together and act in concert to bring about social, political and cultural change, this article demonstrates that the occupied public spaces, such as Gezi Park, hold the p…
Arendt and Benjamin
This essay explores the influence of Benjamin's fragmentary historiography on Arendt's understanding of narrative. I argue that Arendt and Benjamin shared a common understanding of the problems of modernity. For both thinkers contemporary conditions of existence were defined on the one hand, by a similar conception of history, and on the other hand, a break with the tradition of philosophy. I demonstrate that Benjamin's fragmented history, adopte…
Film as a mobilizing agent? Adorno and Benjamin on aesthetic experience
This article evaluates the role of art – particularly mechanically reproduced forms of art – in the writings of Walter Benjamin and Theodor W. Adorno. The central claim is that both thinkers share the same conviction as to the emancipatory potentials of the work of art. Yet, they evaluate the effects of technological innovation differently. The underpinnings of this later resolved discord, however, are philosophical. In contrast to Benjamin’s bel…
