Making kw'éts'tel
Salmon fishing and storage have been integral elements of Stó:lō-Coast Salish household life, economy, and identity in the Fraser Valley and lower Fraser Canyon of southwestern British Columbia for millennia. However, taphonomic factors affecting salmon remains make it difficult to directly study variability in food-related labor allocations, prompting us to focus instead on fish processing tools. This study employs experimental archaeology, arch…
Best Practices for Publishing pXRF Analyses
With its promise of nondestructive processing, rapid low-cost sampling, and portability to any field site or museum in the world, portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) spectrometry is rapidly becoming a standard piece of equipment for archaeologists. Even though the use of pXRF is becoming standard, the publication of pXRF analytical methods and the resulting data remains widely variable. Despite validation studies that demonstrate the importance of…
Divergent population dynamics in the middle to late Holocene lower Fraser valley and mid-Fraser canyon, British Columbia
Monumentality of houses
Houses in archaeological interpretation are normally considered the nexus of everyday activity. We consider house construction as a departure from everyday activity and suggest these events could have provided opportunities to (re)define social relationships as well as structure social relationships within extended kin-based household and cooperative groups. We examine the construction of large semi-subterranean pithouses at the Slocan Narrows si…
Lithic Technological Organization and Hafting in Early Villages
Hafting is an important part of lithic technology that can increase our understanding of socioeconomic behavior in the past. In this article, we develop a holistic approach to studying hafting by using the concept of curation within a broader assessment of lithic technological organization in early villages. Early villages were loci of socioeconomic transformation as part of the shift from mobile foraging to more sedentary cultivation lifeways. W…
Along the Margins? The Later Bronze Age Seascapes of Western Ireland
This article presents the results of multi-scalar investigations into the Later Bronze Age (LBA; 1500–600 bc ) landscape of Inishark in County Galway, Ireland. The European LBA along the Atlantic coast was characterized by the development of long-distance maritime exchange systems that transformed environmentally marginal seascapes into a corridor of human interaction and movement of goods and people. Archaeological survey, test excavation, and r…
Early medieval seascapes in Western Ireland and the geochemistry of ecclesiastical cross stones
Evolution of the Slate Tool Industry at Bridge River, British Columbia
n\t\t\t\t\tThe study of artifact variation with concepts from evolutionary theory has been front and center throughout nearly all of the published works in evolutionary archaeology. Since the early formulations examining the dichotomy of style and function (Dunnell 1978), researchers have developed a variety of sophisticated approaches to identifying and explicating variability in the histories of artifact traditions. Underlying much of this rese…
Lithic Technological Systems and Evolutionary Theory
Stone tool analysis relies on a strong background in analytical and methodological techniques. However, lithic technological analysis has not been well integrated with a theoretically informed approach to understanding how humans procured, made, and used stone tools. Evolutionary theory has great potential to fill this gap. This collection of essays brings together several different evolutionary perspectives to demonstrate how lithic technologica…

Daily Practice and the Organization of Space at the Dawn of Agriculture
Drawing upon the lithic remains from the Late Natufian and Pre-Pottery Neolithic A occupations of 'Iraq ed-Dubb, Jordan, we utilize a quantifiable statistical approach with Geographic Information Systems analysis to interpret shifting practices that influenced site structure. This study indicates that the highly mobile Late Natufian population who inhabited the site had fairly nondelineated use of space compared to a more delineated use of space …
Lithic Core Reduction Techniques
We define diversity in core reduction systems as the degree of deviation from the most efficient means to proceed from the start to the end product exhibited in a given core reduction system. Because lithic core reduction systems are often characterized along a continuum of high or low degree of diversity, some archaeologists have suggested that assemblage diversity is linked to raw material availability and quality. In this paper we provide a mo…
Chronological Frameworks and Disparate Technology
The Emergence of Complex Hunter-Gatherers on the Canadian Plateau
Brian Hayden argues that our analysis of Keatley Creek stratigraphy and dates offers inaccurate conclusions. Although our data demonstrate that the village appeared late and was somewhat unstable, Hayden continues to support a model of early emergence and high stability. Hayden offers no new data to support his position. Consequently, we argue that there is no reason to reject our revised view
Dhra', Excavation Project, 2002 Interim Report
This is an interim report on the second season of fieldwork and post-excavation analysis on the Pottery Neolithic and Pre-Pottery Neolithic site of Dhra', near the southern end of the Dead Sea in Jordan. Excavations to date have produced rich assemblages of pottery and lithics. In addition sets of features that can be attributed to each phase have been identified. Those from the PPNA are generally better preserved than those of the Pottery Neolit…
Calibrated Radiocarbon Dating at Keatley Creek
This paper provides an analysis of radiocarbon dates acquired during earlier and recent field seasons at the Keatley Creek site, southern British Columbia. Results indicate that early occupations predating 1900 cal. B.P. occurred, but were not likely associated with population aggregation and large housepits. The aggregated village appears to have emerged by approximately 1700 cal. B.P. and was abandoned at approximately 800 cal. B.P. A break in …
