Dikili Tash (2022)
Fusion cuisine in the shadow of Mount Olympus
This paper explores the relations developed between Mycenaeans and their northern neighbours through the study of cooking assemblages from four sites in the region of Pieria, in present-day Greek Central Macedonia. A strong connection with the Mycenaean sphere in the 13th -12th century BC has already been indicated through archaeological evidence from graves, but it is the first time that this connection is explored through domestic utensils. Mor…
The Emergence of Metal Use in Greek Eastern Macedonia During the Neolithic Period (Late 6th–5th Millennia BC)
Copper, gold, and silver artefacts, together with evidence of metallurgical activities, have been retrieved from Late Neolithic strata in several settlements in Greek Eastern Macedonia. Recent excavations at Dikili Tash revealed that gold was further used in paints for the decoration of pottery. It appears that the area’s inhabitants had a great familiarity with different metals and the distinct stages of the production-elaboration processes, inc…
Dikili Tash (2021)
Com…

Prehistoric cereal foods of southeastern Europe
This paper addresses for the first time a large body of archaeobotanical data from prehistoric Southeastern Europe, mostly published for the first time, that correspond to cereal food preparations. The evidence presented here comes from 20 sites situated in Greece and Bulgaria, spanning the Early Neolithic through to the Iron Age (7th millennium B.C.-1st millennium B.C.). The remains correspond to cereal fragments or agglomerations of fragments t…

Let’s stop speaking “cultures”
The use of the term "culture" in Balkan prehistory, from the creation of the discipline until today, has followed generally the theoretical principles of the culture-historical approach, which was the dominant trend in the humanities during the second part of the 19th and much of the 20th century. This chapter discusses the examples from the area of the Balkan Chalcolithic, showing why "cultures" are inefficient and even misleading as chronologic…

The Human Face of Radiocarbon
This volume presents the results of a multidisciplinary research program (“Balkans 4000”) financed by the French National Research Agency (ANR) and coordinated by the editor between 2007 and 2011, when she was a member of the Maison de l’Orient et de la Méditerranée (Laboratory of Archaeology and Archaeometry). 192 new radiocarbon dates have been produced in the laboratories of Lyon, Saclay and Demokritos, from 34 archaeological sites, spanning t…
Middle Holocene rapid environmental changes and human adaptation in Greece
Numerous researchers discuss of the collapse of civilizations in response to abrupt climate change in the Mediterranean region. The period between 6500 and 5000 cal yr BP is one of the least studied episodes of rapid climate change at the end of the Late Neolithic. This period is characterized by a dramatic decline in settlement and a cultural break in the Balkans. High-resolution paleoenvironmental proxy data obtained in the Lower Angitis Valley…
Chapter 2. “Balkans 4000”
In the previous chapter we exposed the general framework in which the “Balkans 4000” project was conceived and the main criteria used for the choice of sites to be dated. Here we discuss the precise conditions under which the selection and processing of samples were conducted, and present the results in detail. Sampling strategy The first condition for a reliable radiocarbon date concerns the physical quality of the measured sample (its nature, m…
Chapter 1. The chronological framework in Greece and Bulgaria between the late 6th and the early 3rd millennium BC, and the “Balkans 4000” project
Introduction: The love-hate relationship between archaeology and radiocarbon dating The general outlines of the chronology of the Aegean and Balkan prehistory have been established over the last decades of the 20th century. Previously, it was believed that the development of the local Neolithic was altogether much slower than its Western Anatolian counterpart and that it only arrived at maturity when Anatolia was already entering the Early Bronze…

The lowest levels at Dikili Tash, northern Greece
Tells famously capture the historical sequences of the earliest farmers—but digging them is not easy. With a depth of strata of 17m at Dikili Tash, the earliest occupation was out of reach of a trench. But our researchers got there by coring, extending the date of the first occupation back 1000 years, and deducing, from small samples, the changing environment and possible connections with Anatolia

Characterization of a black residue in a decorated Neolithic pot from Dikili Tash, Greece
A black depositional layer on the inner surface of a Neolithic carinated vessel from the archaeological site of Dikili Tash in Eastern Macedonia was examined scientifically. The layer was initially considered as decomposed organic matter and interest was focused on identifying the original organic contents. The scientific investigation, which included FTIR spectroscopy, analytical SEM examination and optical microscopy, revealed that the black su…
Neutron Activation Patterning of Archaeological Materials at the National Center for Scientific Research ‘Demokritos’
A short history of the application of NAA in the characterization of archaeological materials at the National Center for Scientific Research ‘Demokritos’, Athens, is presented. NAA was first applied in archaeology in 1974 at the Radioanalytical Laboratory, and since 1989 has been one of the primary analytical techniques of the ‘Demokritos’ archaeometry programme. A case study is also presented, concerning chemical patterning of the black‐on‐red N…

This article presents the aims and main results of an interdisciplinary research programme devoted to the black-on-red painted pottery characteristic of the end of the Late Neolithic (4800/4700-3900/3800 BC) in north Greece. The macroscopic study makes it possible to distinguish four pottery groups covering east Macedonia and Thrace, the middle and upper valley of the Strymon, central Macedonia and west Macedonia. The more thoroughgoing study of …
